How do I transfer my files and settings from my old computer to a new one?

We are thinking about getting a new computer, I think a Dell. We want to transfer all the files and the settings just like we have them. How does one go about dong this. I know that it is possible but I am ignorant to the process. Can anyone help???

Well, transferring your data and transferring that and your settings are different. Data, such as music, letters, video, pictures can burn to disk or copy/move to external drive. Installed Applications won't go, you'll have to reinstall from disk or download. On the other hand, you can transfer settings, favorites etc. Use files and settings transfer wizard. or Laplink software and cable.

Forget hard drives and DVDs. Just buy a Belkin Vista Transfer Cable or something and attach them in the USB Ports of the old and new PCs. I think the old one has XP, right? The new one will have Vista. Just go to Windows Easy Transfer in the new one. Then, follow the on-screen instructions and transfer.

  • Take out the hard disk from the old one and fit it in the new one.

Copy the files to the new hard disk or keep using the old one.

If you don't want to do that, copy the files to a DVD and transfer to the new PC.
