Why do we stand idly by and accept unacceptable political authority when we, united as a people, have all the power to revoke that authority?

Our checks and balances system is very, very out of whack. The citizens can't do much without severe repercussions from one or more of many federal agencies that are currently in place to get us in the mindset of, "Who needs the Constitution, anyway?"
That, and if you're talking about America, most citizens are too complacent to do anything about what's wrong with this country.

The reason why people believe in the Big Lie about the existence of this fictitious concept called "authority" that allows some people to interfere with the free choice of others is because they have been educated their entire life to believe that "authority" exists.
Every human being has the inalienable right to do whatever they wish as long as it doesn't directly harm others. Just because the government has more guns than everybody else doesn't mean that they have any right to tell anybody else what to do.

Conservatives see the social sphere as more important hence they believe that is what should be controlled by promoting traditional family values with regard to sex and gender roles, instilling patriotism, etc. Liberals see the economic sphere as more important hence they believe that is what should be controlled by imposing restrictions on business such as minimum wages, welfare for individuals who can't provide for themselves in a market context, etc. Thus each side seeks to limit the freedom of individuals in the areas of life each sees as too valuable to leave to the discretion of the masses.
