Thanks to an unexpected power cut, my Windows XP (Home Edition) has become corrupted.?

1) I tried using the disk that came with the PC to load on Windows again and during this process I got an error message that "WinFast 7950 GT(nvidia) is not registered as compatible with windows"...or some mesage to that effect.

2) Now when I try to start Windows normally, it won't start so I am assuming there is some problem with the display driver that's causing this.

3) When I start in safe mode, I find that I have to download the Driver Detective for latest drivers BUT

4) When I try and install it I get a 1601 NET.Framework error so I cannot run the program to fix the drivers to get Windows to start properly.

Does anyone know a way around this sort of issue without having to pay? I mean I know its a bit naive but I would have thought the whole idea of a copy of the system disk was so that one might actually be able to fix a damaged Windows OS.....

firstly to need to check the drive for errors and repair any

Stick in the windows Pc and when it boots use the option repair my pc using the recovery console

when it drops into the console and you have logged into the windows use the command

    chkdsk /r

this takes sometime but will sort out the corruption problem

then reboot the pc and try to do a repair install as you did before

If this does not work you will have to do a clean install just use the option not to format the drive so you don't lose you old stuff

In your case as he windows installation seems to be corrupt I would recommend doing a clean install

YOu need a full copy of the XP home OEM cd to do this

If you had done the chkdsk /r in the first place you would probably been sorted btw

I only want to say something about the error message you get

    that WinFast7950 GT (nvidia).

You should ignore the warning and continue the installation. I had the same with my Nvidia and because I was afraid, that it would damage my computer I broke off the installation.

I did ask around about this and I was told, that I could install it without any consequences to my computer

It only means that it is not compatable with windows loge or somethjing like that. So Install it and ignore the warning.

It depends exactly how far you've gone: When it first failed, you should have booted from the Windows disc & opted to use Recovery Console, then use the commands FIXBOOT & FIXMBR to repair your startup files.

It sounds like you have now tried to reinstall Windows, and it also sounds like you don't have an original Windows disk; as long as you have your product key, either borrow a disc or download a disc image from a torrent site (Microsoft won't mind - it's the product key that's licensed), and reinstall with that.

You'll then have to reinstall drivers that are missing - easiest way is to look inside your computer to see what bits are in there.

Where you select safe mode, theres an option to select to the last time it booted ok, try that. If that doesnt help then in safe mode uninstalled your video drivers, try logging in normally, download the .net framework 3.5 from www.microsoft.com and then try downloading and installing the lastest nvidia driver for your winfast from www.nvidia.com

    Just repair your windows.

First boot from your CD, then press enter to setup windows, after the required files are copied.

Then press r to repair from CD.

    Accept the license aggreement.

Note that do not press R in the first prompt because you will end up with recovery console.
