Reason for POOR gas mileage in 2007 Ford Focus?
2007 Ford Focus, 31,000 miles
Primarily all of my driving is city, but EPA says this car should get 27 mpg in the city (23 - by revised EPA guidelines) and 35 highway.
I'm currently averaging 16-18!! OUCH! Someone suggested the air filter to us - but the gauge still reads that the filter is good. It's still under factory warranty, so we have an appointment to take it in next Monday. I just thought I'd see if anyone else has had this problem or knew what it could be.
There's also a rough idle from time to time.
I'm not one to accelerate quick at stops.

Sometimes it can be the simplest of things. Yes, the air filter, even if it says it's good. Check it physically, especially if you do a lot of highway driving. Also, check to see if all the air hoses/electrical harnesses are connected and in good shape, that might explain the rough idle.Check them physically not just visual. Sometimes they look OK but when you move them around a little they'll crack even with a low mileage car. Plus, it could be the fuel filter. That is harder to check and just be automatically replaced. Dirty fuel injectors may also be a culprit. That and anything else, like the computer and sensors should be checked out by the dealer. It could be a couple of other things like a head gasket leak or bad valves, but that is unlikely.

If you primarily drive in city there are many factors involved in poor gas milage. Idling at stops is the worst. Also driving habits need to be changed, if you accelerate hard, drive fast, and so on, your gas milage will go down. If you have a rough idle get it checked, but change your driving habits and it will help.

yes, a air filter can rob you of gas milage, also check the air in your tires. theres a couple of things can cause it, maybe the garage can find something else.
