Ford Mechanics - HELP! Focus Air Filter Element Question?
Ok, everyone keeps saying to replace the air filter due to the poor gas mileage we've gotten since we've bought the car in June.
My husband, who works on cars ("back yard mechanci") opened the black box and when he didn't see the air filter he closed it back up.
The gauge still reads that the filter is good. Is this unit still ok?
We have taken it in and it goes back in on Monday to have the fuel mileage issue checked.
BTW, "everyone" includes different shops we've talked to. Even our Ford garage told him to change the air filter which was why he went looking for it in the first place.
Yes, it is a used car. It is a 2007 with 31,000 miles on it.

Probably it is. Is this a used car??? You should be getting around 35 MPG average with this car. If you are not getting at least 30, something is wrong. Start with a good engine compartment degreasing. Get some Gum-out spray, and clean out your throttle body, idle air control valve, and PCV valve and hose. A clean engine ALWAYS runs better than a dirty one! Engine sensors are vulnerable to grease and such. Make sure that the space between the radiator and A/C condenser is free of debris and road dirt (quarter car wash) If an engine cannot dissipate heat, it will get poorer gas mileage and will also lose some power. Try to keep the engine bay factory new looking. Road salt over the winter has a tendency to begin eating up expensive sensors from the outside in, if left unattended. If all else fails, find a competent mechanic you can trust to do a scan of the OBDII system. The Auto Zone will usually do this for free. Good Luck!!! You might try complaining at the place you bought the car.
