Is San Francisco Similar to New York?

I'm starting the college application process and I have a question. I have visited a few college campuses and during my travels I noticed that New York City seems to be the perfect city for college students, it has an abundance of inexpensive and quality restaurants, an excellent public transportation system, and more than enough world-class entertainment options. So this is my question, is San Francisco at all similar to New York City in this regard?

San Fran is great, but there is no where in the world like NYC. For a college student, I'd check out Boston before San Fran.. All the great things about NYC, but with a smaller town atmosphere--or even Phillie. I'd compare San Fran to Seattle before I would NYC.

Umm well i live in SF and know pple from school that are from New York City, and my brother knows people from his school that are from New York City, and they all seem to say that San Francisco is like New York only a lot smaller. I didnt think that the two city's were alike in any way except that they are both famous cities. Well i think there is definitely more opportunity in New York then in SF... but SF is also diverse. It might be the only place in the world where u will see a Mexican food restaurant, next to an Irish pub, next to an Italian pizza place, next to a Japanese food place, right next to a gay church, all in the same block... But I'm not sure how diverse NYC is cuz Ive never been there. The colleges here are really good, but I'm sure the colleges there offer more opportunity...

good luck, and i hope i helped in some way.

  • I have never been in NYC; and I can tell the only thing both cities are similar is the high sky price of housing. NY is the most expensive one followed by "The city by the Bay".

Both cities are rich in culture, you can find people from all the world reunite in a same place. As i said in other answers, it seems as a mix of colours. Very interesting.

Both of them have a very good public transportation system. I have heard NY has good subway service. In addition, I think both have a similar problem the lack of parking in principal areas such downtown. It is almost impossible to find a space in downtown SF, if so, you were lucky lol.

Another similarity between them is the night life. Sf has some cool places to hang out at night. NY i cannot explain more about it cuz' it nickname says all: The city that never sleep...

NY seems to be more stressful than SF. I don't want imagine being stuck in any principal street at rush hour.

Finally, i just mentioned some random similarities. But these are the things that you won't find in NY.

    - The huge and amazing Golden Gate Bridge

    - Friendly people!

    - The unique breeze from the pacific ocean

    - Different weather in the same city

These are few think that just came to my mind, there are more. If I was told to chose one of those cities to study. I would pick SF at closed eyes, but these is my opinion. Remember every mind is a different world.

    Hope this helps

San Francisco has many of the things you list as liking about New York, but the big question here is where you plan to apply to go to school. Unless it's San Francisco State or USF, you're likely to be outside of SF to begin with. If you are looking at the more prestigious universities in the area (Cal and/or Stanford) you're going to be well outside of the City. I would suggest you visit before you decide.

    Good luck!

New York City has a much higher percentage of Jews, Puerto Ricans, Albanians, Dominicans, and Italians than San Francisco.
