ubuntu novice, sticking her head out?

I have fairly solid windows os background and even speak dos. I want to try using ubuntu on daughter's system, which does have xp..but is crashed so bad, that I can't retrieve even explorer to operate. Of COURSE, she does not have the legal install disk for xp, so can't go there, for the time being.

My # 1 goal is being able to get in, and salvage her photos and such that she did not have backed up. I can run a dos window, but it is so tedious.

So.. if I have ubuntu desktop 7.04 (now downloading).. please explain in kindergarten language, how to open/read/install an "iso" file .. what to expect.. will it protect what is already on the system..

After I get the data files safely moved off, it isn't an issue, even if I install an old win 2000 copy. Or maybe make it dual boot for her, and get her learning.

Help, please...

Update:

x, I got lost. Am downloading iso file to working system with vista. Can I burn the cd simply from there?

I don't understand mounting windows files. Sorrry...

Update 2:

burning iso file to cd as we speak..er, type

Update 3:

omg omg omg

holy opensource heaven... it worked...

Update 4:

?? ubuntu screen showed up.. then went to dos looking thing, mounting files, blah blah...

walked away and screen is completely blank, no cursor... no activity.. no shut down even with power button

Update 5:

rofl..for the moment, daughter's machine waits until tomorrow..but swapped cd over to my working vista machine.. and had a ball, thumbing nose at bill gates. Hubby itchng to see what it is like...

You will have to burn a bootable CD. Use Nero if you have or this free program:

    http://www.imgburn.com/

Select the option that says "burn disc image", "burn bootable cd" or something on similar lines.

    * Do not make a 'data CD' as it will be useless.

Put the CD in the drive and restart the computer. It should boot from the CD. If it dosen't, you will have to press F8 to change the boot order.

After you boot with the CD, mount the windows filesystem (there will be a computer icon on the desktop) and copy-paste all files to an external hard drive or Flash drive.

    EDIT:

Yes you are right, you will have to burn the bootable CD on a working computer.

Mounting windows filesystem is easy - just double click the icon; like I have here:

    http://i34.tinypic.com/2q0n6mu.png

If you had more than one partition in windows (C:, D:, E: etc..) then all of them will appear there. Just double click to browse the files, copy and paste into an external media.

    EDIT2:

Try booting with the "safe graphics mode" ?

    EDIT3:

Ok, Ubuntu 7.04 is quite old. Newer versions will give better hardware support;so try 8.04 or Linux mint to recover files.

Adding to the other answer, when you first boot up to the cd it will ask you if you what you want to do. A bunch of options like install, test for defects etc. The option you want is boot from cd.

This doesn't actually change any data on your disk that way your not risking overwriting anything. After you save the data (by following above instructions) you can install ubuntu. Double click the install icon on the desktop and follow the directions

run from iso cd so that u can acess the hdd and save important files. if u want to install run g partition to partition your hdd and seperate program and document files. (Caution: when running G partition be extra careful)
