1993 pontiac grand am?
I'm thinking about buying a 1993 grand am with 169,000 miles on it for $700! The body and paint are almost perfect! Engine sounds good! Is it worth it? Does anyone know about this year and make of car?

It's a poorly built car. Poorly designed. The previous owner has driven it to its end. You are a gambler at $700. If it needs a $500 repair in 2 months, would you junk it or pay $500? Sometimes you just go for as long as you can make your $700 last. Then you do it again.
And yet, when we are young we all have to own a car like this. What else can you get for $700. Nothing. Get it in writing that the car must pass the emission check or you get your money back.

What did your mechanic say?????
Oh, right, you didn't have it inspected just like the rest of the people who come on here and whine about a lemon they bought and have no recourse whatsoever. Just because they were too cheap to have it inspected by a mechanic.
