Is it safe to mix baking soda with dog food?

I heard that this will help with a dog's digestion, and let them have smaller and less smelling poo. Is it true? And how much can i put?

No. It's not necessary and the sodium content would be way too much for your dog.

If your dog is having a problem digesting his food, have your vet check him out. There could be a medical reason for it.

Smelly feces can be caused by low quality dog kibble. Switch to a high quality food like Canidae, Wellness or Innova.

No, baking soda will not let them have smaller or less smelly poo. What WILL help, though, is a higher quality food. When the food has fewer grains in it, the dog will use more of the nutrition, and his poo will be less smelly as well as smaller.

Baking soda is for indigestion, not large, smelly poo. If you want to give your dog baking soda, consult with a vet (he shouldn't charge you for a telephone call) - but I'd bet he'll say "don't do it."

The dog foods that are meat-based are usually much more expensive than the grain-based food you can get at the supermarket. Try Canidae, Royal Canin, or Orijen. Use the kibble instead of the canned if you don't want to mess with dental bills every other year or so. If you can't get it from your nearest Petco or Petsmart, you can order any of them on line - just google the name and you'll get lots of hits on sites that sell them.

    Good luck!

NO! It isn't good for the dog,as it is pure salt! Maybe you are thinking of Adolph's Meat Tenderizer, which has papain,an extrative of papaya in it.This helps the dog to digest it's food a little better, but I have no idea where you got the baking soda tip from.Don't do it!!

What dog is going to eat all that salt, which is what Baking Soda really is ... sodium...?

Wouldnt it drink like tons of water to make up for the soda?

i have never heard of doing such. I dont know why it would work. I would call your vet in the AM, and ask him what he thinks.
