What happens if a field goal try hits a pigeon and misses?

Is there a do-over, or is it just a miss?

Update:

I am suprised this has not happened...maybe it has but in a meaningless game. I don't know.

Just curious what would be the outcome if per say it were the game winning kick in the playoffs or superbowl.... I guess everyone is right, that an act of god is not forgiven, it is a miss.

What if lightening struck the ball...I guess would be equal to strong wind blowing the ball 30 yards left..

Update 2:

I was referring to the NFL, but college could certainly apply...as I am sure they might have a different interpretation.

the pigeon would get carted off the field and get flown to a local hospital and everyone would feel sorry for the kicker and the team if it was the game winning kick.

It would go as a missed FG. Sucks, but that's how it is ruled because nature is part of the sport. In the same regard, if a huge gust of wind happens and causes a miss it is still a miss just like it would be if it hit a bird or whatever else came into the path of the ball.

As long as it goes through first it is good. If what you asked happened, on a game winning kick, say in OAK or CLE, in a Superbowl, my guess is riot.

Tough cookies, it's a miss. It's not unlike when a ball hits a ref or when a player runs into a ref.

it would be a miss. I remember in baseball, a pitch killed a bird that flew across. It counted as a ball cause it never reached the plate

Considering there is nothing in the rulebooks which means its never happened, it would be considered a referee judgement call.

Source(s): you can find the rules at http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=394 click view/download. The rules on scrimmage kicks are on pages 89-93.
