Evolutionary changes within the past 40 years--what do y'all think?

I found this so amazing when I read it. Yesterday, Olivia Judson, an evolutionary biologist, blogged about evolutionary changes that have happened in the past *40 years* for the NYT. It's really cool. What do you think about it, and the examples she cites?

Update:

I'm sure it's also a lie that an ancient queen's bracelet in a museum looks child-sized to you, right? Or that the furniture in Mount Vernon looks way small?

The second example about newly developed cecal valves Podarcis sicula is one of the best examples of rapidly arising brand-new traits that I've ever seen. (I'm not a biologist, though, so there are probably some better examples somewhere).

I've Changed More In The Past 2 Years The Most. Going Into Junior High And Meeting New Friends Have Had A Big Impact On Me And My Decisions. I'm Less Nerdy Also! Haha.

Aha! They're still finches, right? They haven't become another species, right? So macro-evolution is a fraud, and thus creationism must be true!

Sorry, but this is basically what someone was saying over in Politics regarding teaching ID in Texas schools. Even when I pointed out that there is no such concept as macro-evolution, he kept running with it. Makes me sad.

It's citing verifiable instances of biological evolution by natural selection- how creationists have the nerve to say that evolution doesn't occur is beyond me. It's also coming from an American which is great. There's hope for science in the US yet.

evolution is an undeniable fact, it sickens me that people attempt to block its teaching in favor of a story that claims humans were conjured out of dirt around the time the sumerians invented beer.

Well, for starters, I was depressed to learn that "great t!ts" are getting smaller :) (they actually censor the name of a songbird on this site?)

Seriously, I can see the fundies already - "thats adaptation, not evolution!" Man, if those Croatian lizards can do that in 40 years, imagine what a living organism can do in 400,000 years? 4M years? 40M Years?!?!

    Evolutionist simply observed adaptable creatures.

a certain limited degree of the adaptability is built in creatures genes and the evolutionist get exited to report as if an animal can evolve into all kinds of different species but the evidence shows otherwise. Animals can become adaptable to their environment but cannot cross to become other species.

To reject God and live on their own, evolutionists had to come up with something to explain all these evidences on the earth. They'll fight for their evolution theory with their lives.

However they are short sighted on the future of their own lives.

They busy trying to come up with satisfactory explanation, they are neglecting to aware the real problem of our lives. They do not have answer for the deteriorating human society and dieing our home planet earth and not even counting their short lives of 70 or 80 years.

It is absolutely amazing! Also, I've seen a documentary on species in a certain location in south america...scientists who were there for an expedition had discovered several NEW species! Can you imagine!

Good examples. I'd also like to add the rapid changes in bacteria and viruses, that have evolved and mutated to be resistant to antibiotics and anti-virals.

You know, there is a big difference between evolution and adaptation. Just because a species adapts to changing enviorment does not mean it is evolutionary. The examples is not evolution, period...
