if u wanna connect just two computers then u won't need any hardware, just get a LAN wire with ethernet plugs at both ends..
then connect it to the ethernet ports of both the PCs and u will seee one in others Network Places.
if ur PC does not hav a ethernet port then get a ethernet card..
for networking more PCs u'll need a HUB..

If you have 2 computers only in your LAN then it is so simple you just need a LAN cable and one NIC card for each computer. Connect them physically and Make a workgroup by following these steps (Start -> Run->type Sysdm.cpl->computer name->change->change workgroup name like (MyOffice) and change computer name like (Computer1).
Note : the work group name should be same but computer name should not be same for each computer and finaly change the IP address by (start -> control panel -> network connection -> write click on Local Area Network -> Property -> configure IP address 198.168.0.1 to range of 198.168.0.255 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default IP is 198.168.0.1. then click close. Reboot your computer and enjoy.

The easiest way is to use a hub switch, or a router, then create a network. Windows has all the tools for creating a network.
A router is best, because it also gives you added internet security, by having a firewall, plus it uses just one IP address to access the internet no matter how many computers are connected to it.

I think you should definitely do what the other responder said, as it'll allow you to expand the network easier in the future. But you can also hook them up directly using a cross-over Ethernet cable.
You can learn more about cross-over cables here:

And here's some information on how to setup a two computer network with a cross-over cable:
