Dress Code In Golf?

Please tell me why, it must be collared shirts and no shorts. Shorts to the knee are so bad that I should not be allowed to play? A shirt without a collar is not as good as the identical shirt with a collar?

I mean good thing I read the rules of this course before going, but come on.

So my question, Why? IS it just an elitist thing that we like to thing we are better than everyone else and must dress nicer?

Update:

Theo, I think thats the definition of elitist. Look, I love golf. I just don't see why in 95 deg. & 85% humidity (typical summer day in NJ) that Pants should be mandated.

Also a friend of mine told me that on a private course in Northern NJ where his company was having an outing the course forbid cargo shorts that went to the knee, making people buy $75 shorts from the pro shop that did not have the extra pocket.

What purpose does that serve to the game. All I hear on the golf channel from the PGA is that they are trying to expand the sport and want more involvement by youngsters and more people. Well, this dress code is prohibiting that.

And no its not a safety issue either. What is pants protecting? sun burn and bug bites? Use sun screen and bug repelant. What are collars protecting that collarless shirts do not?

By the way, its not like what I was wearing was crappy clothes. Ralph lauren shorts and an eddie bauer three button collarless "polo". Not a shlub outfit.

Golf etiquette refers to a set of rules and practices designed to make the game of golf safer and more enjoyable for golfers and to minimize possible damage to golf equipment and courses. Although many of these practices are not part of the formal rules of golf, golfers are customarily expected to observe them.

    Here's the attire rule:

Some golf courses mandate policies regarding attire, so golfers are recommended to inquire about clothing rules. The usual golfing attire for men are slacks, a collared shirt, and golf shoes. For women, a golfing outfit usually consists of a knee-length skirt, a collared shirt, and golf shoes. Many golfers also wear golf hats, which differ depending on players' needs and preferences.

    Hope that helped!

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.

You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net/

Where I live, it just depends on the course. Some require collared shirts, but allow shorts. Others don't care. Sleeveless t-shirts are allowed at some.
