Is drawing an inborn or can it be learn?

I am currently 17 or so, and I want to learn how to draw really bad. Whenever I try, I am horrible and not so good at it but what are your opinions.

Is drawing a talent? Or could I learn how to draw a decent figure?

My cousin is really good and I mean superb when it comes to memory drawing and I will ask her how to teach me how to draw but I am a little bit doubting about myself...

Update:

I just want to learn how to draw because that way, I could draw my imagination which with all proudness, is vast!

It's both. The spatio-perceptual part has an innate limitation, but one has to learn how to transcribe what they perceive through the the medium/media of their choice.

One can improve their perceptiveness to a certain extent, like one can build their muscles to a certain extent. And just as some have maxed out muscles without hardly trying, some are strongly perceptive without really trying.

Your ability to bring this to your medium will never exceed your degree of perception of your subject. Without some degree of training, it won't even approach it.

On the up side, even if both of these traits don't rise to professional levels, this hobby remains quite enjoyable. (Face-blindness has set a kind of limit for me; my work is never likely to be mistaken for Boris [Vallejo], though that would be cool.) These skills, even when amateur, will also improve other interest you might have, as well.

Also, does your cousin draw original figures or from photographs? Those are two different skills. The former is more like sculpture.

Also, the day you stop taking joy from this pursuit is the day you stop growing in it.

If I understand you correctly you're asking how can you learn to draw really good?

Most things we do are a learned behavior and you need to have an aptitude for it. However small that aptitude may be mind you. I can't write or draw for crap. No matter what I do I just can't make it look nice. With that being said either you have it or you don't. Also, its a learned behavior but this behavior must be backed by your ability to do it. You can take a class but if the passion (aptitude) isn't there then its just wasted money IMO.

I can learn to fly a space shuttle but not as well as someone who has an aptitude (passion) that supports being a pilot.

Find your own niche in life. Just because your cousin can draw really well don't mean squat. He can draw really well but he may be a mass murderer if you get my drift. What matters is what you are really good at. Don't live your life following the passions of others.

Drawing can be learned. Since the days of caves, humans have been drawn to drawing--before language it was used to record events and decorate. Basically, if you can hold a drawing utensil somehow, you can draw. You just have to continuously practice, no matter how bad you are, or how discouraging it is to see people younger with way more skill. If you're afrid of getting soe=mething wrong, look to life! Want to draw hands? Stare down your own. Dogs? Keep your tv.paused on Animal Planet.

Source(s): So anyway, it may take a while, but you can definitely learn t draw.^_^(is trying....slowly....)

Some people are just naturally gifted at certain things like art. But, if you really want to do it, you can learn. It will just take you a lot of really hard work. Don't get discouraged because you may have to work a little harder.

Some people have a natural talent for artwork. Most people who don't have that talent can still learn to be a decent artist; however, it will take a *lot* of practice, and I do mean A LOT.

  • some people are born with a natural talent but it wont get them very far without practice. you can be good at something naturally but to be great you must learn.
