Definitely Owen Hargreaves. Won every title in Germany and the CL with Bayern Munich, and then won the EPL & CL in his first season with United.
Plus, he knows where to shut up and let his feet do the talking.
Unlike Mascherano.

I think they are two different styles of defense. Mascherano is more of a hard man. He makes a lot of important tackles and we all know he isn't afraid to get down and dirty a little bit. Hargreaves on the other hand is more like the link between midfield and defense. He does a lot of passing and comes down the wing but at the same time fights for possession.

Javier Mascherano, he's just a monster and no Striker would like to face him whereas Hargreaves is petty and pretty average.

IMHO, it depends on what you want from a player. If you want a touch of finesse with the ability to change positions midfield - right back I'd say OH. If you want a dogged brick wall who can stop a train, I'd say JM. He is also a good passer of the ball and has exceptional defensive capabilities that surpass Hargreaves. OH is more versatile and has a touch more skill. Take your pick. I'd go for JM purely because of his determination and he will soon be the best DMF in the premiership and up there as one of the best in the world.

Owen Hargreaves, hands down. He's much more versatile and an overall better player than Mascherano.

Hargreaves. Mascherano is an exceptional defensive midfielder, no doubt, but Hargreaves wins it for me because of his versatility. He can play right back, right mid, centre mid. He also has excellent play-making ability and is very useful for outside the box free kicks.
Take, for example, his perfect free kick against Arsenal:

Javier Mascherano, by a mile or two.
(Not just being biased, Masch is an absolute monster...and, well...Hargreaves is pretty average.)
