I have a guestion...Why do children under the age of 18 get social security disability? We have child labor...

laws so children aren't able to work some places until 14 others until 16 so why would an infant with heart defects or other problems start getting Social security disability benefits before the age that they would be able to earn money? I am asking this question because it does not make sense to give parents that are able to earn money free money because their child is disabled. And there are many jobs disabled people can do, like be a door greater at walmart, bag grogeries, be a cashier or receptionist, a bank teller. What makes a person disabled. I understand that mentally disabled people should get S.S.I because they are limited to what they can earn but how about people that are smart enough to get desk jobs? I also understand about people getting into bad accidents on the job site and losing a limb or extreme pain getting S.S.I

The thing I don't understand is why are babies getting S.S.I? Shouldn't S.S.I be for people who have worked or have a mental disability?

Update:

I do work for a doctor so I do see sick children with cancer that both parents work and do not depend on outside help they pay for insurance and have dedcutibles to met but are very responisible and very loving and caring educated black people.

Update 2:

I am sorry to hear about all the sick children in the world and thank you (those that answered my question) very much.

I did not grow up with lots of money at 3 I was diagnosed with lead poisoning though through tough work I have over come it. I am the reason (my father fought to get the law change) that there are laws regarding lead in households. I was the first child to receive S.S.D.I. benefits for that. But I do not believe parents should use their child for finacial gain, which I have seen alot of in my young life (only 22). I have seen parents buy coke and pills with the money the child recieves which to me means they don't really need the money it is just another resource for their income to buy drugs. I have had a very hard life with more challenges than most of you. I moved out at 16 because I was verbally and physically abused my mother's girl friend. I am not jealous of anyone I have no reason to be. God has meant all my needs and thank heaven for that. And for those of

Update 3:

you that wish my unborn child I will pray for you because god bless you you need it. I have to trade school. And by having lead poisoning I believe is the reason I am not the best speller and they don't have spell check when you post a question so sorry.

My first appartment me and hubby got was a studio $450 a month ultities included. At that time we leaved across the street from convicts and I was pregnant and had severe morning sickness which caused me to lose my job I lost 17 pounds in the beginning of that pregnancy. I scored an 98% on the national certication for my medical assistant lincense The four questions I missed were all spelling by the way the test is 200 questions.

I am not perfect nor am I mean. I help in my community and right now am not on my antidepressant because of the birth defects it can cause. But sorry you can't see that negativety in your own life will only truely hurt you. Thanks again for all of your answers.

Fox.... kinda stepped into it on this one, although I think you had a true question, some of the people in Yahoo Answers seems to have attacked your opinionated question. Some of them have failed to remember the reason you are asking the question is that you don't know the subject matter, and THATS why you are asking! Period. Just to give you alittle info, I myself suffer from some ailments where I can not work, even though if you met me on the street you would think I am a healthy indiviudal, however, I am not, I have Parkinson's, Cronic Pancreatitis, Focal Epilepsy, etc, etc, etc, again, I may look healthy when I go out, but I can only last going out for maybe a couple hours a day, before I have to go rest and take another series of meds to ward off the shakes and pain, and proclude a seizure from coming on. I have applied for SSD, but in the Gov't infinite wisdom, I was turned down. Disabled Children are authorized to get SSI, even if their parents are working, this allowance is to help with the expense of medical care, upkeep, and general support of the child. You have gotten alot of good answers as to why they are getting this, I would just like to remind people to understand this is a question of not knowing the answer, not a statement against the practice. Foxy didn't know, and if you look out at the welfare and social security picture most people see it as a bunch of freeloaders trying to get a free ride. That's not Foxy's fault, it's the fault of the people WHO DO scam the system, it gives a good program a bad name, so let's take it alittle easy on the condemnation of her question, and how she put it. She's asking so she can learn!!!!

Being disabled is very difficult and costly. These babies get this money so that they can live and have medical treatment. I am going to tell you that Social Security isn't like you think it is at all. I am disabled and it took me 5 years to get approved for disability. The Government does not just hand out money like you think, you have to have some pretty serious health problems and issues. You don't just get Social Security or SSI you have to be half dead to get benefits in this country. Social Security is an entitlement account meaning that if you are truely disabled you are entitled to benefits. The people that do receive Social Security are truely disabled and they have been through hell getting approved for those benefits too. I know someone that has a child that receives benefits, the child is missing a femur bone in his leg, now that is pretty serious and they should be entitled to benefits.

I dont have a child who recives disablity benifets and I thank god for that, I do although have a child who needed a kidney transplant and all I can say is for a parent with a sick child it can wipe you out finacialy and it's good that the state gives them disablity they are sick which is why they get it. There are so many adults reciving disabity bennifits that could work and dont they suck the system dry for those who need it.

I think you would change your tune if you had a severly sick child and you had to stay home to care for it, and spent most of your money on medications and treatments to help your child live, you would then appreiciate recivieng some help from the state to care for your child, and still the money they recive I bet dosnt even cover half the things they need in there life to just function. I think if you had a baby whith a heart problem or cancer or even mentaly retarded you would think differently and accept any help you could get, it's so easy to judge when you havent walked in a parents shoes with a sick child, maybe you should do some voulenter work at childreens hospital and see those sick little kids and there parents who work so hard and are with there little ones careing for them and still have to work to get good care for there child it's not an easy thing.

I think they should give them money and to the parent as well for caring for the child at home then taking the easy way out like some parents do who throw there kid into the state care and never even go and see them.

If you want to be upset with any thing about ssi then look into all the fake clams were paying for on adults who can work but are just home enjoying getting paid by us for doing nothing, in there fancey homes nice cars and going on vacatoin those are the ones who wreck the system for the ones who truely need it.

If any thing it should be monitered better and people on ssi should be checked yearley buy the state so that the fakers can be stopped and the aid go's to those who truely need it

Because in some cases, it takes a whole lot more than what the parents can make to take care of a child with disabilities. They are not getting free money, they are drawing off what their parents paid in. It is harder now than most think to get on disability because of the ones that got on disability faking their problems. I have a cousin that is limited now because of brain injury from having a tumor removed and my aunt told me he applied but was turn down and appealed. It has been 2 years and he still has not heard anything. I have heard of people with terminal illness die waiting to go on disability. In reality, Social Security needs to review all disability cases over 8 years old and see if that person still needs it and that would cut out a lot of waste and give those that deserve to be on it now a better chance of getting what they need.

You are clearly very young and have no idea what is involved in taking care of children, even healthy ones without disabilities -

This is very mean spirited of you and just because you work doesnt give you the right to judge others - I have, in my lifetime paid MORE taxes than you probably ever will given your career choices --

So as the major tax payer between the two of us, I at least have the sense to realize how much work and how hard it can be to care for a disabled child -- and giving them benefits is a REALLY GOOD IDEA -- at least someone has some sense and compassion

Responsibe loving parents DONT receive benefits for the care of a disabled child? I find it a little hard to believe that ALL the parents you see in your climic are coming in with their income statements and tax returns for you to nose through --

You are suggesting that if someone receives disability benefits to pay for the extraordinay needs of their child they ARENT responsible or loving parents?

Your reasoning is seriously flawed, but I am going easy on you because your post, the things you say and your less than perfect writing suggests you are VERY young and not well educated.

What is your situation? Are you paying a mortgage? Supporting a family? Paying for childcare? Making car payments? Paying utility bills? Having to provide very expensive care for a disabled child? Or are you still living at home sponging off your parents or other family members, and MTV is your whole life?

Here is another thought, IF you pay less taxes than people earning a more money than you, you are "getting a free ride" using things like roads, hospitals, schools etc that are paid for via tax dollars, because your contribution amounts to beans given the job you have --

So STOP using roads and streets and things ! Dont even flush your toilet !!! You are free loading off other tax payers - shame on you !

  • I highly resent the questions that you have asked and with good reasons.

I am a Person With Disabilities (PWD). I was born with various physical congenital physical Disabilities. I also have some acquired invisible Disabilities. I do NOT have any type of a Mental Disability.

My only child was born with Autism and Mental Retardation. I am my adult child's legal guardian due to the fact that my child has been declared mentally incompetent by a court of law.

I got my Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and my Medicaid on my FIRST try based on one of my physical congenital physical Disabilities. The congenital physical Disability that qualified me for SSI is a type of Disability that a person can NOT fake.

My only child got their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and their Medicaid on their FIRST try when they was a child. My adult child still receives SSI and Medicaid. My only child also got Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Medicare from their father's Social Security benefits when they became an adult. My child still receives SSDI and Medicare.

It IS required by law to use a child's and an adult's Social Security money for their benefit if you are their Representative Payee.

To raise a child with Disabilities (CWD) IS extremely expensive. A CWD needs various medical specialists and various educational specialists. A CWD needs various expensive specialized services, and even expensive specialized treatments and expensive specialized equipment.

SSI is money that comes from tax revenues. A person on SSI is only allowed $2,000 in assets. SSDI is money that you or your parents have paid into the Social Security system. There is no financial restrictions if you are on SSDI.

It irks me to no end that some people think that if you are on SSI that you are a rich person! It is NOT so! The current full allotted SSI amount is $637 monthly. Various PWDs who are on SSI do live in poverty.

The cost to raise a child with certain disabilities can be astronomical. SSI is for people in poverty with disabilities. If parents have a good income their children cannot get SSI. If an adult has a good income they cannot get SSI.

SSDI is diifferent. It is only for people who has a history of working and have contributed to it. It is an insurance program. Children of people who have paid into it can also get it on their parents record. SSDI is for people who have become disabled and can no longer work.

Sometimes, disability-related expenses are very costly, & sadly, insurance doesn't cover everything all the time. We NEED this extra $$. We didn't ask to come into this world with a disability.

  • 1 decade ago

Mobility equipment is very expensive, that's why.

    Respite care is expensive.

Maybe these kids will grow up capable of work, maybe not. It certainly helps their chances later in life if they recieve adequate care whilst growing up.

Not all disabilities are the same.

I really can't believe that you work for a doctor with that kind of uncaring, judgemental and patronising attitude ... especially when you're talking about kids!
