How do you calculate the percent off on an item?

Example: When you go to a store and they have a price tag of $39.99 on an item. And it says that 40% off. How do you calculate the original price of that item.

    100% - 40% = 60%

    60% = 0.6

    0.6(39.99) = about 23.99 or 24

    1 % of any amount is 1/100 of that amount........this is the key idea So 40% is 40/100 ( which is 4/10) of 29.50 So 40% of 29 .50 = 4 x 29.50/10 = 11.80 Then 29.50 minus 11.80 = 17 .70 which is the amount you would have to pay

    p/(1 - n%/100) = p_o

n% is the percent off of the item.

    p is the discount price.

p_o is the original price of the item.

I work out by taking 10% and then working it out from there

when you are looking for 10% most of the time you remove the last digit and you get what you need.

    100% = 39.99

    10% = 3.99

    40% = 15.96

    x=100%

    39.99=60%

    39.99/60=60=60

    1%=0.6665

    100%=$66.65

you take the actual amount of the item, multiply it by the %, take the answer you get and subtract that from the price of the product.

    ex. $39.99*.40= 15.996

    $39.99-15.996= 23.994

    the price then is $23.99

    100%-OFF = ? , IF 15% OFF

    100%-15%=85%

    COST PRIZE=1499

THEN TAKE 85% INTO DECIMALS =0.85

NOW 0.85-1499= 1274 IS THE SALE PRIZE

    40% of 69.99

  • 1 decade ago

    = $39.99/(1 - 40%)

    = $39.99/(1 - 0.4)

    = $39.99/0.6

    = $66.65

    Answer: $66.65

    Proof:

Original price - discount = discounted price

    $66.65 - 40%($66.65) = $39.99

    $66.65 - 0.4($66.65) = $39.99

    $66.65 - $26.66 = $39.99

    $39.99 = $39.99
