Peru wants jail for nude woman using flag as saddle?

The whole story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080724/od_nm/model_fl...

---

"LIMA (Reuters) - A naked model photographed using Peru's flag as a saddle while mounted on a horse will face charges that could put her in jail for up to four years for offending patriotic symbols, the country's defense minister said on Wednesday. ..."

"The photos were republished on the Web site of Peru's El Comercio newspaper: http://www.elcomercio.com.pe/ediciononline/HTML/20... olemicas-fotos-leysi-suarez-causan-revuelo.html "

What she did is tasteless but I thought the punishment is a bit harsh. Apparently it is the law in Peru about 'defacing the flag'. I think a slap on the wrist with a fine would be more in line. What's your thoughts? ♥ ∞

Update:

EDIT: My comments were not a criticism of Peru at all. Sorry it sounded that way. The law is the law, for sure. I'm a Libertarian in my way of thinking and believe that all people have the right to have less government interference, even if it involves tasteless acts like the one above. I remember the 1960's-70's when many of us were wearing American flags on our jeans behinds or our hats. There were some calling for jail time for people doing that too. No, I'm not a flag burner before someone throws that out there. ♥ ∞

From an American standpoint it's ridiculous. However, culturally, perhaps they find it an affront to their national sense of pride. I think it's silly.

In this country we cherish freedom of speech/expression. It's a cultural thing, I think it's way over the top to jail someone for that but that's me seeing it from my perspective, being reared in a country where our constitution guarantees freedom of speech.

    Hi

well in this situation i think it requires more than a slap on the wrist , maybe a slap on the bottom would be more suitable in this case: )

seriously though she must have known the law if she is a Peruvian national . So like in most countries you break the law you face the consequences .

In my country, I think should be the case of Peru, patriot symbols, like the flag, are sacred, and is ilegal to use it as clothes, as publicity, or for doing a joke. I think she broke all those rules.

  • It depends on what her intentions were, she may have not meant any disrespect for Peru and if she says she is sorry, she should could a fine at tops. A person is worth more than a flag.

Surely someone was aware of this law present at the shoot. I agree it is a bit harsh, but lets be real...in some countries she would have been killed or jailed for being naked.

It may be distasteful, howeber, if this is the law in Peru and she knew the consequences then it's tough luck i'm afraid!

Peru can run it's country without any help from interfering Americans.

USA dosn't like being criticised, so let other countries do their thing.

She knew better than to do that when she did, people need more consequences so they can stop doing stupid stuff for attention. That was nasty.

Extradite her to the US stat
