What do you think of My Bloody Valentine's album "Loveless"?

I recently bought it after many, many reccomendations and have listened to it many times. I know its acclaimed and everything, but I don't really get it. You can't hear their voices half the time, and the wall of sound/ distorted guitars really gets to me after a while. I really only like a few songs like "Only Shallow". Can someone explain the appeal of this album? Maybe I'll understand it more.

Update:

Thanks everyone.

I think I will start to appreciate it more with every listen. Its definitly different tham anything else I've heard.

Well obviously it's down to personal taste - just because many people like it doesn't mean everyone will.

The things that you dislike are the same things that I love.

The obscured vocals, the incredible walls of sound and distorted guitars are all part of the appeal to me. This wall of sound effect is what I seek in much of the music I listen to.

As for why it's so highly acclaimed [aside from the fact that I think it's brilliant] it was something new, different. It's beautiful yet harsh. The guitars are distorted yet still melodious. The voices are heavenly. The album is incredibly varied.

To this day I have never heard anything exactly like MBV, and Loveless is the album that I feel showcases MBV's talents and originality.

You can never adequately explain why you love something. I feel I haven't given the album justice with this answer, but I've tried.

It's totally unique, nigh on impossible to re-create and has never been bettered in its genre.

The things you described are the things people both love and detest the album for-the impossible to decipher words, the noise guitar, the impenetrable sounds of everything, the 'samey' sound of the whole album, and the fact it's brutally harsh and impossible to penetrate or even begin to properly analyse.

The album exists in this rarified orbit that no other band can even claim to have come close to. Billy Corgan tried hard to get The Smashing Pumpkins' distortion to sound like MBV, even going as far as hiring engineers that worked on Loveless to help with his own records. He definitely failed. No band can sound as heavy as this record as far as I'm concerned. It's the noisiest and more heavy record I've heard.

In time, you will begin to enjoy the record. I think Q Magazine has reviewed the album this month, giving it 5 stars. Q has kinda gone down the old toilet in recent years, but teh review is well written and describes the album very well. Better than I have, or indeed anyone here (sorry peeps!) has.

I'm also sure somewhere on the internet someone posted their uni thesis on the album, which is really indepth and is a fascinating read, particularly if you're struggling to find any worth in the album.

I think it is one of the most brilliant albums I have ever heard. I love the loud/slow distorted guitars with that haunting voice. Each track brings something different to the album, and listening it all the way through is really a pleasure for me. It is extremely chill yet not chill because of all the distortion. Shoegazing is a genre that either will work for you or won't.

I really want it.... I've listened to most of the songs though and have a sense of what it sounds like though. Right now I like it but I'm not too crazy about it. It seems like one of those albums that will immensely grow on me after each listen. I think the vocals are the best part of the album. The way they flow with the music.

Shoegazin'. It's possible it won't ever click with you, that's what sets us apart from each other. I actually haven't listened to it yet, but like you I've heard tons of great things about it. I'll be picking it up soon enough and I'll find out....sometimes with me multiple spins of the record will help me find the appeal.

I bought it like 2 weeks ago and I love it actually. I don't really know the appeal, but to me it's like ambient yet edgy at the same time. I agree the voices are hard to hear, but I have always been drawn to different or hard to understand vocals.
