Lead free dinnerware?

I'm looking for black dinnerware that is lead free. Unfortunately, it seems that any dinnerware that must be painted has lead in it. Surely non-lead paint can be used, though, right? Or am I stuck buying boring white plates if I want them to be lead free?

I have two sets of dishes that are black. Both are lead free. One is shiny ceramic and it came from Ikea and the other is matte black and it is pfalzgraff. I also have a set of square dessert plates that are matte black and those are not sold in sets but individually, though the entire set is available with dinner plates, cups and saucers, salad dishes when purchased by the piece. You can find them at Macy's if they are still being manufactured.

Any plates sold and manufactured in the USA will,of necessity, be lead free regardless to the color. Anyway, dishes are not painted, but glazed a process which involves the melting and subsequent baking on of various colors of powdered glass.
