My computer isn't recognizing my external hard drive?

I have Windows XP and a Memorex Ultra Travel Drive. The external hard drive worked fine before, but all of a sudden my computer doesn't recognize it. I go to My Computer and the drive (typically E: for me) doesn't show up at all.

When I go to look on the device manager to check the status of the external hard drive, it says that it's working properly.

Any tricks to get my computer to finally realize that my hard drive is plugged in?

Have you added any internal drives (Hard Drive or CD/DVD drives) to the computer since you last used your external drive? (Sometimes this will cause the drive letter to change and you don't see it right off).

When you check disk management, does the external drive show up there? (Right click on My Computer | Click on Manage | Click on Disk Management).

Have you tried unplugging other USB Devices and just plugging in the Hard Drive?

Will watch for any additional details and update then.

hi koala, yes hit start>settings>control panel go to your system icon device manager scrol down to your ide controler or what it saids for your external harddrive right click and hit properties update your drivers. after you do this close to control panel agan and go to internet options hit the advanced tab scrol all the way down the page under security. make sure that ss01 ss02 and ss03 are all checked and save. now close to all of these pages and you are back at your desktop again hit my computer right click C:\ scan disk button you will notic that search for system errors is already checked just hit ok and a sign will popup schedule a scan disk hit it and reboot your system your computer will reboot then start a quick scan. now try it if it still is not working something is wrong with your harddrive and will have to be taken to a computer repairman but this should have fixed it. good luck hope i was helpful to you

Source(s): maybe you can do a system restore but this is the last thing we can try hit start>programs>accessoriessystem tools scrol down to system restore there you will see a calender hit the first lit key to your left your system is setting your computer to that date

even with the actual undeniable reality that you probably did not supply any options about your computer, in spite of the undeniable fact that, i'd propose you examine the present USB port to confirm it really is two.0 nicely matched. at the same time as plugging it in, pay attention of such blunders message as “you're Connecting a 2.0 gadget to a Non 2.0 port,” or something similar! also, attempt connecting the demanding rigidity through yet another USB port and then restart the gadget in a while. in case your computer continues to be unable to go back around the demanding rigidity, then it would nicely be defective.

Plug it into the computer, before you start the computer.
