Is it wrong to do a criminal background check without someone permission, but it was for your safety?

My current roommate is now showing her true colors, she is lying so much that it is ridiculous. She gave me 2 bad checks and she still haven't paid her portion (security deposit and rent)..I told her because of this situation I want to do a background check because I am not comfortable with everything she is doing and saying..(lies after lies..)..She said she doesn't the credit check and employment verification, but she will not sign for a criminal check. That was a red flag for me! Why would you not sign for a criminal check, is there something she's hiding? Well of course there is, so I went online, typed in her name and DOB, and lord behold..she was convicted for IDENTITY THEFT AND WRITING BAD CHECKS AND MONEY LAUNDRING! Lord have mercy, I started crying..she could have gone into my room and took some info about me...I froze all my accts but still very scared.

So, In New Jersey, Is it illegal to do a criminal check without her permission. PLEASE HELP ME! MY LIFE IS IN YOUR HANDS!

Update:

The 2 checks came back as account closed and the accounts her in Maryland she claims, I asked her why can't she open one in Jersey, she said she doesn't have her social security card, but I remember seeing it when she pulled out her fake checkbook..my guess is that she is banned from opening accts because she might me in chex systems..WHAT A CROOK!...I WANT TO PRESS CHARGES SO BAD BUT HER BOYFRIEND IS PART OF A GANG HERE...MY LIFE IS AT STAKE...IM REALLY CRYING HERE BECAUSE I LOVE THIS PLACE AND I DONT WANNA MOVE...WHAT SHOULD I DO. PLEASE HELP!

    It is illegal.

However, what you did is not illegal at all. Those are public records and anyone can look at them. It is not a crime. There is a reason they are public, so that you have the opportunity to know this.

You have serious cause to be concerned.

If she filled out her rental application and said she was not a criminal (it is a standard question) she can now be evicted for giving false inforamation.

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://bitly.im/aNx05

Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.

You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

Criminal records are PUBLIC RECORDS. You do not need anyone's permission to search criminal records on them. If you have their name and date of birth, you can go into any courthouse in the United States and perform a criminal background check. Good luck!

Whose apartment is it? Yours or hers?

get her out of apartment, NOW

yes, it is illegal in most cases to do a criminal background or credit check without some one's permission

You NEED to check out roommates BEFORE you sign a lease with them, before you move in together. . .kind of late now. . .

writing you bad checks and not making good on them is a crime and you should tell her to move out or press charges, ASAP

You can just be very nice, telling her you can't afford the apartment without a roommate paying their way--don't go into all the other stuff--and because she owes you 2 months rent, she has to go NOW.....

As you are not a Law Enforcement Officer or an authorised person, you have no right to make a Criminal Record Check [if indeed you could] without her permission.

Why the hell are you hanging out with gang chicks? Her court cases are public record, you did nothing wrong. Get her OUT first then worry about the bad checks.
