not real sure of exactly what you're trying to accomplish. If you could include an example it would help.
assuming you're just trying to use a $ sign as a character in some formula, you'll have to put double-quotes "$" around it.
for example:
="$"&A1 (where A1=50)
result would be $50

The dollar sign has no function in a formula. However, the result displayed can have a dollar sign. Just right click the cell and do format, cell, number, and pick currency, and how many decimal places you want.
