what does =+ mean at the beginning of an Excel formula?

    back before Excel (when Lotus 123 was "king"), you started your formula with a "+". So you would enter +A1 to get the value of A1.

    When Excel came out, they changed it to be =A1. But you can still type +A1. When you do it the old way, Excel shows the formula as =+A1.

    Of course you can also do -A1 which would be the negative of A1. And Excel will convert this to =-A1

    bottom line is, it just means it's "adding" the cell reference that follows it.

    It's just how you start a formula. I guess you could say that it means 'put the result of everything after this here'.
