why is "i.e." the abbreviation for "that is"?

    i.e. is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase 'id est' which means 'that is' or 'it is'. Why do we use Latin abbreviations in English? Ah, that is a different question.

    People in chat rooms use these shortened words and numbers to save time chatting on screen. I believe it should not be used in forums such as this. To type these abbreviated words in here can confuse the questions they ask,and we can't answer rightly because of this. Also,I see that there are many that do not know how to use "chat room abbreviations",and THAT really confuses others.

    i.e. means 'that is to say'.

    i have lots of canines, i.e. boxers, German Shepards, poodles, Dalmatians, etc etc :P
