Why won't Word open on my Mac?

We can't open any of our documents, we just get that coloured wheel and "an unexpected error occured (error code 1712)

Why would this be?

Thanks for your advice and for not giving a stupid answer.

    Hope this helps a little:

"The Mac OS X System Error Code -1712 is a bit of an ambiguous one as all that it means is that the application has timed out.

We got Error Code -1712 when we tried to run Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection on one of our staff’s Macbook.

To diagnose this error in more detail we opened up the “Force Quit Applications” with command + option + esc. The program that I was trying to open was already open (RDC), so I force quit it in the list.

After force quitting the offending application I was then able to start it again, without coming up against the “Error code -1712″ error again."

definition of 1712: error -1712 errAETimeout: the AppleEvent timed out

If you still don't have found what you can do to solve this, just seek for a different application to run your word documents

Try to use NeoOffice, it's free :D

There is a compatability issue between one version and the others. Do you know the version of Word the documents were created with ? Do you have access to another version of Word. I have not the problem myself (Mac with Word 2004). I'd try OpenOffice as well, or whatever else was handy before going back to whatever version of Word created the files.

The reason I got into Macs was because I needed to create quite large, graphics intense documents. I doubt that file size alone is the problem. It seems some conversion or other is going on until everything stacks up perhaps.
