Does this, or does this not promote racism/segregation?
I work at a place where we are always researching districts/schools websites and I am finding things like this more and more common. This was literally copied and pasted from a district’s website! Is it just me, or does this not teach the children by example that segregation is ok?
AFRICAN-AMERICAN PARENT COMMITTEE
We now have a Web page for announcements and information related to the African-American Parent Committee meetings and activities. Please click on "District 20", then "Parent Connections" and then "AAPC" right below the "Parent Connections". Thank you.
kate: Are you saying that blacks are different than whites? So much so, that it is necessary to have ethnic based groups to focus on these differences?
soulflower: Where in the world do you get off calling me racist? Cite it! Because I question ethnic based groups in our public school system? I thought we were all equal! FYI-I am half hispanic...so you can use that "you don't understand" card...on top of all that, I also grew up in a poor urban school. However, the fact still remains...this is an ETHNIC based organization in a public school system...and you think that is OK!?! You really don't think this may promote and/or teach separation to our children?

My husband and I are African American. Our young daughter is of course African American.
At the private school she attends there is an AA organization as well as one for Asians, Latinos, GLBT, though these are groups that meet privately.
Can't speak for the other groups but the wealthy, White kids that go to this school treat our children quite differently than the others. What is interesting is that just about all the Blacks who attend the school are wealthy too.
There are many, many issues to consider as an African American parent, particularly one in a predominantly White school.
People like you don't realize when you are being racist and how it hurts and affects OUR children.
For example, our parenting group met last week to resolve an issue with another little girl. Some ignorant girls said that she wasn't pretty and that her features weren't "decent" and we discussed how we would help her and what have you.
Many of the lousy parents and kids our children attend school with don't want to invite them to parties and such. They also try to dominate school events to the detriment of our kids.
And this happens in urban and suburban schools, as well as private ones...
YOU are NOT BLACK. You cannot begin to tell me or anyone who really is BLACK what my issues and concerns are...

Eh, it could go both ways, but to me: no. I can definitely see this as simply a group formed to address any possible educational/school issues that are particularly affecting/relevant to black students....
edit: no, i'm not. i'm saying that the legacy of racism is still affecting people where it shouldn't even exist: the classroom. there are many black students (such as myself) who are successful, but there's also those who have to go to schools where the resources are poor/barely in existence, the teachers are average at best, etc. These factors place these students at a clear disadvantage; not to mention the fact that discrimination, whether from teachers or students, still occurs against them , no matter what school they attend (i should know, i experienced it through high school.) Those are some of the factors for having groups like what you've described earlier.

LoL I don't know. Maybe? I dare you to go to one of the meetings and see what it's about. This question was hilarious. I can't imagine how you must feel. I really don't see the need to be upset so soon well, because Black Americans constantly have statistics shoved down our throats about how poor we perform in school. Maybe those meetings are held for those purposes.

Ohh yeah I remember those days.
Usually those type of committees pop up when their kids start getting treated differently by their teachers or other students.
Which is exactly what triggered our parents to start their's when I was in Middle School.

No. I feel like people have the right to create groups and committees that cater to their culture, tastes, interests, and whatever else. I just think minorities do it more and therefore Whites feel its reverse racism, but in reality nobody is stopping them from doing the same things.

The general feeling about this is that it is racist as we cant have a White people club.
