Does this, or does this not promote racism/segregation?

I work at a place where we are always researching districts/schools websites and I am finding things like this more and more common. This was literally copied and pasted from a district’s website! Is it just me, or does this not teach the children by example that segregation is ok?

AFRICAN-AMERICAN PARENT COMMITTEE

We now have a Web page for announcements and information related to the African-American Parent Committee meetings and activities. Please click on "District 20", then "Parent Connections" and then "AAPC" right below the "Parent Connections". Thank you.

Update:

Nina: Would you be saying the same thing if it had said;

EURO-AMERICAN PARENT COMMITTEE

We now have a Web page for announcements and information related to the Euro-American Parent Committee meetings and activities. Please click on "District 20", then "Parent Connections" and then "EAPC" right below the "Parent Connections". Thank you

Update 2:

Fdm215: I definitely respect your position, and like you, I believe each social group will have their priorities. In addition, I also feel that it is a constitutional right for people to be associated to groups/organizations that promote their religious/ethnic/cultural/etc.. beliefs and/or priorities. However, is it appropriate for these kinds of organizations to have a foot hold in our public school systems? If so, shouldn’t it be acceptable for all ethnic groups to be represented with their own group? If this was allowed, would it not teach our children that it is ok to segregate and that we are really different with different needs/priorities?

Update 3:

L S: If this was just another group doing this kind of activity...I wouldn't have posted. However, this is in our public school systems, which is a whole different animal!

It's okay to self-segregate if you're black; it's NOT OKAY to self-segregate if you're white. This is the way the game is played today.

The fact of differences among people (ethnic, religious, gender, geographic, etc) is not what causes racism or segregation. They way we react to people because of how like or dissimilar they are to ourselves, is what lies at the root of prejudice and isolation. I'm an African American who grew up in a working class big city household with divorced parents. My best friend is from an Italian American family, staunch Catholics, middle class, two parents, smaller suburban family. Anyone who knows us thinks we are sharing a brain. Our personalities are radically different, as are our tastes. This is a simply illustration but it can certainly be found on a much broader scale.

Recognizing that these differences sometimes lead us to have difference priorities shouldn't be a problem. For example, I wouldn't have a problem with an Chinese American or Irish American or Jewish or Gay or Grandparents committee. I would assume those parents wanted to meet and discuss issues and goals they have in common. So long as there is also a PARENTS groups for everyone to come together... what's the problem?

It's not racism or segregation IF it's started or was thought of and requested by African American parents. There are MANY MANY issues I went through in school that my white friends had no inkling about. It sounds like a support group. It sounds fine with me.

Have you watched the entire series of CNN's Black In America? It's oh so true. I guess when you've been called a ******, a monkey, laughed and called ugly because you weren't white/hispanic you'll understand better. When you get pulled over CONSTANTLY by the police because your man's driving your 2008 Chrysler 300, you'll understand...

I would like to join such a committee if it existed in my daughter's school. They have one but its bilingual, and most of the time their speaking spanish and forget about the rest. I just stopped going... I was getting no where being in it it seemed. It sounds similar to a Grandparent committee

Yes, based on what you wrote...but so what? There are plenty of white groups that do the same thing. Far as I know the KKK and skinheads are free to do whatever they do as long as they are not affecting others. Let these people do the same.

No, it's not segregation; they're doing it by choice.

It's just a group getting together to discuss their common issues, just like a "Christian Parent Committee" or a "Single-Parent Parent Committee" or a "Gay Parent Committee." They just want to make sure their specific interests are being met.

If it bothers you so much, start your own group.
