he is not at all forcing anyone to do anything he is giving people a higher more positive way of looking at things...My son learned Spanish just because he was a good student & was was strict about him working hard in school. He is now living a fabulous life because of this. He is very educated but he loved construction & moved up quickly in his career. When he was in his 20's he did the same job that other who took until their 50's to arrive at & I don't know if it was the Spanish or the positive attitude he has towards learning or both. You can imagine in construction he is a much needed person. He is 30 years old & has a 6 figure salary. So if you don't want you don't want you child to learn Spanish that is OK with me. I am like Obama though & I believe in giving the best of myself to others so I would encourage you to look at the way he is instead of the way you are. Most of all if you think he is "forcing" you to learn spanish you have some issues that have nothing to do with him. You have a victime complex & problems with authority amongst some other issues that if you worked on them your life would be more to your liking.

First let me congratulate you on your mastery of the English language. Your English is as good, if not better than that of some of the native English speakers who posted replies to you. Since you say it is important to speak English correctly, and I am a grammar teacher, I have corrected your post so that you can learn. Take it or leave it. By the way, most of your usage was very good. There were only two errors that would bother a native English speaker. One was the 'talk' vs. 'speak' that another poster mentioned, although many in the US make the same mistake; the other was your use of 'grammatic.' See below. When will Latinos in the USA learn to speak Spanish correctly? They suck, [change this comma to a period or a semicolon]always mixing Spanish and English? [This is a fragment. All English sentences (except commands) require a stated subject and a verb. Try "THEY always MIX Spanish and English." Present participles (mixING) when used as verbs require the helping verb "be" (am, is, are, was, were, etc.) in front. Also, this is not a question, so it needs a period instead of a question mark.] The times I've traveled to the USA I always noticed the same. [You used a present perfect verb (I have traveled) with a simple past verb (I noticed). Make them the same, and since it has been multiple occassions, they should both be present perfect. "During the times that I've traveled to the US,(add comma) I HAVE always NOTICED the same. There are almost no Latinos that you can talk properly with. ["Talk" and "Speak" are similar words, and sometimes they are interchangable, but they do have different uses. "Talk" usually has the idea of "platicar" and should never be followed by a language, whereas "speak" is what one does to a language, or when your discourse has a specific purpose. You SPEAK English, you SPEAK it properly, or you can SPEAK to your brother about his drinking habits, but you TALK to your friends (about nothing in particular), or you TALK too much. Proper English bans the use of a preposition at the end of a sentence, although most native English speakers in the US ignore this rule. It is more proper to say, "There are almost no Latinos WITH WHOM you can SPEAK properly." Or you could simplify the sentence to "There are almost no Lations who speak properly."] All they do is mix parts of English and Spanish in the same sentence, when grammatic are totally different. [This is your only sentence that made it obvious that you are a foreigner. "la gramática" is a noun in Spanish, but in English the noun is 'grammar.' The adverb is 'grammatically', the adjective is "grammatical" or "grammatic," but "grammatic is rarely used. Try "All they do is mix parts of English and Spanish in the same sentence, when THE GRAMMAR is totally different."] Come on! Have more dignity and learn both languages!

Of all of the major economies and sucessful countries around the world, none of them speak Spanish. It makes no sense for us to learn to speak Spanish, however learning Chinese or Japanese is not a bad idea.

I do not know anyone in the workforce who speaks Spanish, it is useless for most college educated citizens, unless they plan to be a social worker.

Ah, the proud ignorance of U.S. citizens. In any other country in the world bilingualism would be seen as a sign of a good education, worldliness, something to be proud of. Only in the U.S. would a suggestion to learn another language be taken as an insult. In answer to your question: Obama is probably trying to get U.S. citizens to acknowledge the cultrual and ethnic diversity of the people who make up it's population, and help us prove to the world that our nation isn't run by bigots, but don't worry. If one is truly determined to hang on to his ignorance, no one can take it away from him.

Please explain the use of the word "force" in your question. I don't see or hear anything that shows Obama intends to force people to learn a second language.

And his suggestion would apply to people who non-English speakers as well, wouldn't it? That is, if all you know is Spanish, then he's saying it would be a good idea to learn English, too.

You need to pay closer attention to whats said. Obama has specifically said immigrants should learn English. He says this IN THE CLIP you cite. Obama is suggesting that being bilingual in a global economy is a good idea He's right.

In your very clip he said that immigrants should learn English.

The vast majority of the 6 billion other people in the world know a second language.

Isn't it a little arrogant to think that our kids shouldn't know a second language?

Learning a second language has nothing to do with pandering to illegal aliens, but in boosting the laging IQ's of Americans. Children in most of the world are taught a second language early on.

One of only things Obama has voted for since being a Senator was he voted against making English our offical language!

A suggestion is hardly the same thing as 'forcing' us to do something. It's been proven that learning a second language is beneficial.
