My Hermit Crab would survive a nuclear blast?

Ok so now that i have your attention...I've had several hermies over the past few years and they have all eventually died but i have this one little guy who is Still Kicking!! Most of you are thinking well isn't that a good thing? But i'm wondering, he's about 2 or 3 yrs old & been alone for about a year or two now since all the others die off. Why do the others die off but not him? he doesn't eat every single day and when he does he likes banana and other dried fruits. he isn't super active, he will change shells once in a while but not often. he climbs sometimes and has a 10 gallon tank filled with sand and stuff to climb on. i keep his tank as humid as possible and try to keep him warm. i dont want him to be alone but every other hermie dies eventually. what's so special about this little one? this sounds messed up but why won't he die???

Update:

Do they NEED other hermies around? or is he fine by himself? It was hard having the other ones die and that's why i haven't bought him a friend : (

Congratulations for the survivor! Crabs die for various reasons, and we don't always know why. Keep in mind that they are forced from their natural homes into painted shells (not good for them), shipped to the stores, and then home to you once you buy them. All this creates stress for the crabs, and some cope better than others. There are many questions that I could ask you about the conditions of your "crabitat", but you may be better off checking out http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com./

Despite their name "hermit", they are a very social creature. I would definately get you a buddy or two. I don't know what size your current crab is, but here is a general rule of thumb:

    Jumbo - over 3″

    Large - 3″

    Med. - 2.5″

    Small - 1.5″

    Teeny - 1″

    Micro - .5″

How much space should each of your crabs have in a tank?

    Jumbo - 5 gallons each

    Large - 4 gallons each

    Med. - 3 gallons each

    Small - 2 gallons each

    Teeny/micro - 1 gallon each

He's healthy and you take good care of him. be proud of that. I have had many hermit crabs. then my grandmother killed them by locking them in a room in the middle of a snow strom and our power had gone out in stead dof bringing them down stairs buy the fireplace. this happened while I was at my mothers.
