How do you feel about the new Y! answers features?

I was just commenting to a friend that also participates here on how frightfully poor people's spelling and grammar are.

We have people in the politics section posing questions and opinions about the next potential President of the US of A and cannot spell 'opinion' or 'president'.

And then there's a little search box suggesting doing some research before answering, what a novel idea.

Do you think this will affect the quality of the content or will people simply ignore it?

Update:

Naturally if someone doesn't have English as their primary language errors are understandable. That should by default come with forgiveness. And sure, we all make mistakes, I certainly do. But I find it truly embarrassing when people born and raised in the USofA cannot spell even the most simple words. 'Baby' is popular, I cannot count how many times I've seen is spelled 'babby'.

Update 2:

Charlie, I'm afraid you are correct.

I do like it, except that is makes the font too small. It is much more difficult to spot typos.

I hate the new features and will ignore them. As for other people's posts, as long as I can work out what they're driving at, the state of the typing doesn't bother me very much. In Small Business we have a lot of posts by people overseas whose English is pretty raw, and with other users elsewhere as young as nine years old, I'm not expecting the entire site to be flawless.

In a word - "No". Like one of your other answerers has said, most will simply ignore it. It does bother me though that so many people don't care about grammar and spelling anymore. That doesn't bode very well for the future of our English language, does it? I personally think it's pretty awful because I really care about it. *sigh*

People who care about spelling correctly already use spell check. Those who do not care or insist on using text message type spelling will ignore spell check. I really doubt that it will make a difference.

Honestly, I wouldn't care more. I usually just go on here to ask questions and occasionally answer them so having little tips and stuff don't really matter to me.

    Just my opinion.

It'll help a little bit. People don't care much about anythin' these days. If only people cared. *sigh*

  • Its really useful because it tells you how many mistakes you have got and tells you to make your answer thorough so it increases the chances of best answer.
