No, Jack & Rose were characters for the movie.

    From http://www.keyflux.com/titanic/mov_faq.htm

Q: Did Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater really exist?

A: No. The characters of Jack, Rose, her mother Ruth, her fiancee Cal, his bodyguard Spicer, Fabrizio, and the treasure hunters are all fictional creations of James Cameron. They are not based on any real people but rather are dramatic representations of the rich and poor people on the Titanic.

There was a J. Dawson among the crew who is buried at the Fairview Lawn cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. However, his first name was James and his existence was unknown to Cameron when he wrote the "Titanic" screenplay. This fact does not deter hundreds of movie fans from leaving flowers and notes at the gravesite. I approve of the misunderstanding because it helps remind us of the plight of the real victims of the Titanic.

There certainly are elements of the movie that are real. Kinda have to be considering the Titanic was real and it really sank. However, there was a great problem with the love story. Proving it actually happened in any way similar, if not exactly, as what is depicted in the movie. The easiest solution was to introduce two fictitious characters who would be able to experience the love story in the way depicted without having to worry about whether or not it was historically accurate.

That's one of the biggest problems with a historical movie that's based closely on history is accuracy. Words can be placed in important person's mouth, though there is always a question as to whether or not the person would have actually said them. Of course you don't too heavily change what they may have actually said, if at all, when you have it recorded. For instance, a ACW movie having Lincoln give the Gettysburg Address has him giving the Gettysburg Address. Not something that would go:

"About eighty-seven years ago our ancestors fought the War for American Independnce. Now we are engaged in a civil war to determine the survival of the nation they created. Today we gather at a battfield of that war to dedicate a cemetary for the burial of the young men who lost their lives here."

The Gettysburg Address is rather well known, so people would take acception to Lincoln saying this in the movie. Whereas people are going to be less likely to know what he said the morning of November 19, 1863 before heading to the dedication of the cemetary. So it would be possible to have Lincoln say something like "I can only hope at least some of the people feel my words are appropriate to this occassion" without it being too noticeable.

Then you have historic movies such as Titanic where history is more of a backdrop for the fictional aspects of the movie. Again you worry about historical accuracy, but you worry less about it as you are not pay attention to actual historical figures. Or you are not paying as much attention. You pay attention to some of the events and to the dress of the period But you let the fictional aspects play the key role.

Hence Jack and Rose and their romance. Fictional aspects playing the key role with the history surrounding the Titanic being their backdrop.

Totally not real, compare it to the Wizard of Oz - not gonna happen!

Perhaps there was some nobody named Jack from the Americas and a rich girl named Rose who was practically suicidal, they met, fell in love, had a steamy tryst - tada! Ya, that could have happened, but of our knowledge of the actual happenings while the ship was at sea - it didn't.

Now that's not to say the film isn't good, their recreation was brilliant - the likeness between their sets and the photos of the dining room etc etc etc - is amazing.

I'm not American, I googled 'wv' so I'm assuming you meant West Virginia...there is a touring exhibit of the Titanic, it came to my city, at the Royal Musem and it was extremely good. You get a ticket at the beginning and you are supposed to assume this person's role, you become that REAL passenger and read about yourself, your family and friends as you go along. You wander through reading and looking at photos of people on board, their life story - and best of all their belongings from the ocean's bed are actually on display, ancient and very breakable, you take in a gasp of air when you stop and really think "Hey, these aren't fake, they're the real deal" They've also recreated rooms, cabins etc of the ship, so you really are walking around inside it.

Now, I won't tell you the end of the tour, because I think it would ruin things if you ever see it - but it's very interesting.

This might be of help, I do hope you'll get a chance to see it. Here are some upcoming locations -

The characters were entirely fictional. In fact, many of the "real life" events were changed to make a more exciting film. For all the historical accuracy they cared about the story could have happened on the good ship lollipop.

It was a fictional story made around a true story. There are plenty of documentaries around on it. There are some exhibitions on the titanic but most seem to be in the UK. it might be worth looking at some of them and seeing if there is a touring exhibition coming your way.
