Recording using an SPDIF input/Creative X-FI

I've just bought a Creative X-FI Extreme SoundBlaster sound card on my new computer and was wondering if it is possible to record stuff like my keyboard onto the computer using the SPDIF input?

I'm not a fan of Creative products for recording or anything, but if you have an SP/DIF input and, like the other poster said, you have an SP/DIF output on your keyboard, it should be fine. SP/DIF is generally a digital and optical format so you'll need a special cable and certain adapters to plug into the mini-jacks in case that's where the SP/DIF signal is coming from or entering into. If that doesn't work, you can use the Line out on your keyboard (provided you have one) and input into the line in on your sound card. Most keyboards send MIDI signals instead. These are not audio signals. You cannot "hear" a MIDI signal, but you can hear the device it triggers. MIDI signals typically enter into the USB port or through a specialized interface. Some keyboards also have Audio-outs that can go in through USB as well allowing you to record anything synthesized on your keyboard.

If your keyboard has an SPDIF output, I don't see why not.

I think there's a "software switch" that can toggle the rear microphone input between analog and digital, but I'm not sure whether the digital format would comply with SPDIF specifications or not. The reason I don't just go to the console and see is that I'm in Linux right now, and the Creative software is made to work with Windows.

in the experience that your keyboard has an SPDIF output, i do no longer see why no longer. i think of there's a "application substitute" that should compliment to toggle the rear microphone enter between analog and digital, yet i'm no longer sensible in spite of if the digital format ought to compliment to regulate to SPDIF specs or no longer. the reason i do no longer basically pass to the console and be conscious is that i'm in Linux top this 2nd, and the resourceful application is made to artwork with residing house abode windows.
