Am I being unfair if I decide to do this with my check?

This month, when I get my check, I'm keeping it for myself. I only get $360 each month and last month my family made me spend the whole $360 on bills. When I asked for money from any of them they would not give me a dime. They work and get a pay check every week. I'm unable to work, because of my seizures. Am I being unfair if I decide that this month I am not going to pay one bill and keep my money to myself this month so that I do not suffer like I did last month?

Update:

last month my family added not a dime to the bills. I am married. My husband gives daughter money left and right, but gives me nothing. Am I being unfair?

That depends on who's name is on the bills. If your name is on them, and they are due, you really should pay them to prevent falling behind on them and potentially ruining your credit. If they are in someone else's name, and they have not been paying, then screw them and keep the money for yourself.

Legally it's yours to do what you like with it! If the rest of the family is working, I think it's downright mean of them to take the whole check! I am assuming this is a disability check from the Government, right? If I were you, go to the bank and cash it, or better yet, open up an account in your name only. That way, it isn't floating around the house where they can get their hands on it! If by chance, one of the bills is for you personally, such as medicine, or something personal (are they doing the shopping?) Pay it by check! No more, no less! Then if it is something from the grocery store, ask to see the receipt, and pay, again, by check, that amount! Don't for goodness sakes give them the whole check!!! What are they going to do? Kick you out!? Now! if it does come to that, Social Services will help you out, and perhaps find you a place to live! $360.00 isn't enough to live on in this day and age! Just get that money into the bank ASAP!!!

Discuss with your family that you would seriously like to begin putting some ($60) money aside each month for savings and expenses. As browneyedgirl made very poignantly, if you are 18 years or older...you are technically a guest in your parent's house. If they're paying for your food, clothes, heat/hot water, etc. there really is no amount of fairness for their care thusfar in your life...appreciate a roof over your head, then come back to the table with something at least reasonably negotiable.

    Good Luck!

If you make purchases and have bills then you need to be responsible enough to pay them. Learn the value of money. Who pays for you food, housing, and living expenses? Ask your family to help you set up a budget and learn to save for the things that you want.

Well, you really need to repost this in the Disabled Section too. If you live in the house, you need to pay some of your check for rent and you need to pay some for food too but keep some for yourself and movies and fun.

Source(s): I am Disabled too and some has to be saved for rent and food and transportation. Good Luck.

Well, it is your money so I would say you can spend it on yourself, but maybe think of giving some to your parents since they have provided you with food, clothes and all that? Talk it through with them. Hope my advice helped.

    Who pays for your food?

    Who pays for your rent?

Who pays for your clothing? personal care items?

If your family is taking care of these things and is having a hard time making ends meet, then you should be contributing your check to your expenses as well. It costs much more than $360/month to feed/clothe/shelter a person.

Fairness is not determined by how much of your disability check you get to keep. Fairness is determined by whether you have paid for your expenses. Only you can know that.

You question does not properly frame the situation. Try again.
