New Jersey Senator Demands 'Recapture' of Hundreds of Thousands of Visas in Order to Allow Reauthorization of E-Verify

WASHINGTON, July 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Senate consideration of a bill to reauthorize the E-Verify program has come to a screeching halt, as Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) is demanding that hundreds of thousands of visas - mostly for foreign workers - be made available to special interests. The E-Verify program, which will expire on Nov. 30 if it is not reauthorized, allows employers to electronically verify workers' Social Security numbers to ensure they are legally entitled to work in the U.S.

In recent years, voluntary participation by employers in E-Verify has grown exponentially, as businesses have found it a convenient and reliable way to comply with laws against hiring illegal aliens. Sen. Menendez is seeking the 'recapture' of unused visas - both employment and family-based -- going back to 1992 in order to permit reauthorization of E-Verify to move forward. By some estimates, the number of 'recaptured' visas could be as high as 600,000.

They aren't really 'recaptured unused' visas, since they rolled over to and were used by other categories.

And he wants to raise the number going forward as well. He is making it a condition of stopping stalling everify, but also the drilling bill is in Congress this weekend, and he may try to move it there, IMHO. He failed to get this during the comprehensive bill debate and dems are fleeing for the weekend rather than be there for the showdown, again IMHO.

If congress lets this through without debate or ability for people to give comments to their congressmen, I do not believe it is something voters will simply overlook come November. Voters may be stuck with a bad Presidential choice (or no choice) on this topic (although some of us plan to vote elsewhere). However, I think Congressmen and Senators will be held to a strict standard.

To someone above, they are talking about raising the H1B cap, but not to 500,000. That is a huge number when you realize that chain family immigration would let them bring family, and let them bring family....forever. The problem is the entitlement programs and schools are failing, and there is no provision for handling such a greater drain on them.

and if this is the same thing Menendez was pushing before, it is not for new workers, either. However, I haven't been able to find details yet on this particular push for visas. I am just assuming it is the same as he was pushing before, for lack of other information. It came up just yesterday evening, and he is trying to push it through tonight or over the weekend, as I understand it.

He is just another toady of big business who doesn't give a damn about the American worker. These jerks are both Dems and Repubs. Business wants cheap foreign labor who will work for less than American workers, and they are getting skilled workers from India and other countries. Some of these foreign workers are Muslims who hate our country. I say that we need a program to train more American workers in the tech sector so we don't have to import foreigners. You can send the message below to your Congress people.

Congress is considering increasing the number of H-1B visas. This will result in lowering the salaries of American high-tech workers.

    Dear Representative,

I know first-hand the way in which the H-1B program harms American workers and I am very disappointed in your support for another H-1B increase

I don't understand how in the world Democrats can win back the majority pledging to finally make the government work for the middle class and working people and then turn around and call for an increase in H-1B visas - wholly disregarding Americans who are in employed in fields affected by the H-1B visa program.

There is no documented proof of the need for more H-1B visas. To the contrary, salaries at Microsoft are not keeping up with inflation and Microsoft has been asking its software developers to take furloughs so the firm can save money. This suggests there is no labor shortage, and thus, no need for more H-1Bs.

Stop supporting Big Business as usual and try putting working and middle class people first for a change.

    An American for sovereignty,

P.S. There are over 4 million illegal aliens in this country that have overstayed their visas; try doing something about that. Until we have a method for identifying and deporting those who have overstayed their visas, we should be cutting back on the granting of visas, not increasing them.

Because the Indian guys that have been waiting in line for 5-6 years for an immigrant visa # want to get their green cards before they retire. Their consulting companies have been moaning and groaning about this for years, because they end up having to keep paying to extend their H-1B's year after year until their green card goes through.

Personally I wish they would keep the cap as it is, rather than completely opening the flood gates for India and China. Canada made that mistake already, now in many cities the population is very heavily Indian/Pakistani/Chinese these days, white ppl are quickly becoming a visible minority up there :)

Same reason they always vote for more visas, guest workers, amnesties and free trade agreements. They hate us and this country.

What's wrong with increasing foreign visas? I'd like to work in the US someday!
