windows vista can sometimes get a little confusing, but its not when you get used to the programs.

when you first open your computer (if its brand new) your computer will ask you to answer a few settings questions. answer them and your computer will load to the main screen.

    (1) click on the button on the botom of the screen that has the windows symbol.

    (2) on the right hand side of the selection box that pops up it will say "control pannel" click on that.

    (3) Click "security"

    (4) click the option that says "require a password when computer wakes"

    (5) type in the password and your good to go!

    hope this helped!

    good luck!

Set a password for the user:

Windows + R and type in control userpasswords2

Then change the password for the user if required and make sure that the "User must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

You can do the same through the control panel > users but I find this more efficient and it has more things that you can do through here.

Use Windows + L to lock your computer when you want the password to be active.

Also you want to make sure you that you set the power options. Go to the control panel or type in Windows + R then enter powercfg.cpl.

Then click on "Choose what closing lid does" and make sure "Require a password" radio box is selected. You can also set sleep or hibernate, that's up to you.

    1. Press CTR+ALT+DEL. You’ll see a screen with a menu of options. Click on Change a password….

    2. If you already have a password, enter it in the Old Password field, otherwise, leave it blank.

    3. Enter your new password in the New Password field and the Confirm Password field. If you need help thinking of a good one, here’s a post with a tip on how to create a strong password that you can remember. Once you’ve typed it in twice, click the blue arrow to proceed.

    4. Your password is changed! Click the OK button to continue on your merry way. If you had any services or features that used your credentials to login, you may need to change them manually.

set a password the regular way GO to control panel, hit users and then set a password. Then go to battery options (hit the little battery thing on the bottom of the screen). On the side of the screen hit the "What to do when I close the lid" then hit require a password.

Go to control panel and set a password. When you want to stop using the computer, click the 'lock' option from the start menu.

Yes. First you need to make sure you are allowed to install your copy of XP on more than one system. If that is an issue. Otherwise, if your XP cd is bootable, then make sure the system is completely turned off, and the cd is in the cd drive. turn on the system, when it asks what you want to boot from, choose cd. During the setup you will be asked if you want to format the drive, and/or add/del/erase partitions. Make sure you delete the current partition, and create a new one, using maximum amount of space allowed, and install XP. Good luck.
