It is a Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as a French Mastiff. A French breed that isn't that common, it was developed for pit fighting five centuries ago.

The actual dog in the movie is "Beasey" who died in the early 90's.

dogue de boreaux. Or french mastiff. They are beautiful dogs, i used to want one really bad. But after researching them, i have found that they are not naturally as fun loving as hooch. They were bred to be guard dogs, and tend to be dominant. I have found that they are not the right dog for me. Although, i know that any dog can be a great dog, it just takes time obedience and socialization. If you are prepared to have a challenging dog, then i'm sure they can be great dogs, but i know i can't handle a dominant dog.

All of the above are correct. He is a bordaux, french mastiff. I used to have one. Her name was Canille, which means cinnamon in french. They dont drool as much in real life.
