How can I get rid of this virus? I've tried almost everything!
Somehow my computer was infected with a virus, and while I've been able to fix some of it, I'm still having extreme problems.
First, since being infected, if at any time my screen saver pops on, I get a blue error screen and my computer has to be shut down. However, I cannot turn my screen saver off, either. The tab to change my screen saver has completely disappeared.
While that happens no matter who is logged in, the main sign-on is having a lot more problems. The task-bar clock has been replaced with twenty-four hour time and a large "VIRUS ALERT!" right next to it. On my start menu, everything has been removed, and there is no way to get to anything like All Programs or my Control Panel. I cannot load My Computer, and if I try bringing the Task Manager up, a message informs me that the administrator has disabled the task manager (though I did not).
The biggest problem for me personally is that I cannot afford to buy a virus removal program. I'm running the free version of AVG Anti-Virus, as well as PC Tools Spy Doctor, but neither of those have fixed the problem.
What can I do? If I back-up my files I can always delete the sign-in that's having the problems, but there's still the problem of my screen saver causing my computer to crash (it's also been set to a very low time limit, which will basically guarantee if I leave the computer for anything it will crash).
I am about at my wit's end. I truly appreciate any help anyone can give me.
I have run boot scans and unfortunately, that did not resolve the problem. :(

It certainly sounds like you have been infected with some kind of malware. Unfortunately, if you find one infection, it is highly likely you have another one. A virus, trojan or worm are all different types of infections/malware and there are some great FREE programs that can help you.
First, clean up (delete) your cookies, temp files and temporary internet files. I prefer to use Ccleaner to do this, rather than the built-in DISK CLEANUP, as I feel it does a much more thorough job - for example, it will clean out the index files on your next reboot.
If you want to use Disk Cleanup, you can find it if you:
- Double-Click on My Computer to open it up
- RIGHT-click on your C: drive
- Choose PROPERTIES and then click on the DISK CLEANUP button
- When done, reboot your computer.
Delete these files daily or run Ccleaner every day right before you shut your computer down.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor is an excellent program
but if you are using the free edition then it only offers
limited protection and detection you have to pay for the full service.
AVG is terrible it detects nothing and is even worse at removing
what it does find.
Do you know how to format your computer or reinstall your OS that's one option that will fix this problem.

If you need more anti-virus programs, try Kaspersky or Norton 360. I think they have some demo types. Kaspersky does have a online virus scanner for free I think.
