Working behind the scenes for television?

All right, while in NYC I took a tour at NBC--and became absolutely enamored with the idea of getting a job there. I'm most interested in things behind the scenes like a producer. Can someone give me detailed job descriptions of some other behind-the-scenes jobs? And are there certain degrees or beginner jobs I should look into for these?

Thank you.

Update:

I'm not professional, that's the point of asking this question. I want to be informed on how to get into the business--to become professional. I'm a teenager for God's sake, I've got time to grow. And not to be a *****, but you misspelled "professional,"--that's a little pot calling the kettle black, huh?

There are a lot of jobs behind the camera, but what you can get really depends upon where you live. In many local markets your best bet is to work at a station as a manager or assistant manager. This often involves making sure everything is set up technically for filming the news and other local programs, managing the camera people (or software) and doing some directing You can also work in sound or with cameras, but more and more of these positions are being replaced by computers to save money. My brother in law is an assistant manager at a local TV studio, and he controls the camera for the news via a computer, they don't have camera men anymore. He also runs the teleprompter, and does the run throughs with the anchors.

Be aware that this is a really competitive field. Look into colleges that offer a degree in Film or TV production or Communications focusing on TV production. You can also get fancier and look into programs on film making.

To get an early start, see if your local college (if you have one) has summer classes for high school students. I took a class in TV production one summer through the local university, which had programs for high school students. Also see if there are adult ed classes on the subject that you can take. If you have a local TV station, see if they'll give you a tour and give you some pointers.

    Good luck!
