Why do American Christians hate evolution so much?
There is no reason to believe that the two cannot coexist. Believing in one does not mean the other is inherently false. If a god is great enough to create the world, wouldn't he also be great enough to allow it to evolve and grow, or do Christians just assume he was not that intelligent? If you look at your biblical stories of creation, evolution easily could fit in there.
The evidence for evolution is becoming more and more irrefutable, like it or not. But I just don't understand why there is this visceral hatred for it coming from Christians.

I want to thank those who gave me more than a one sentence, knee-jerk reaction. I sometimes come into this forum expecting thoughtful answers that took more than ten seconds to think of, but am always disappointed. So I appreciate when some people actually take the time to contemplate the question and give a thoughtful answer.
To just a nobody, you missed the entire point. Instead of thinking about the question you spouted off the same tired old babble. Does your Bible also tell you not to use your brain? God gave you one, use it. You can't cite the Bible as a factual source, even you have to admit that it is not entirely fact.

Because they are being left behind by it!
Science has shown atheists have a higher intelligence than people with a strong religious faith. The difference is 5.8 points according to findings in developmental psychology!!!
More members of the "intellectual elite" considered themselves atheists than the national average.
Only 7 percent of members of the American National Academy of Sciences believed in God. Whilst only 3.3 percent believed in God in the UKs Royal Society.
Several Gallup poll studies of the general population have shown that those with higher IQs tend not to believe in God."
Evolution in action with Christians getting left behind like the monkeys and apes before them!!!

You're very right. I believe in evolution, it is basically a fact now, but that does not mean that I don't believe in a supernatural (God etc) either. So whether people don't believe in God, or they do, evolution can still have its place. The two can easily coexist. I think a lot of people's problems come from taking the Bible very literally and having this idea that if the Bible does not say it, then it can't be right. Also, they probably have the idea already in their heads that evolution is wrong and against God or their faith. Well 2000 years ago science was hardly even a topic, so you can see how the creation myth and many other stories could have been explained by those ideas that are in the Bible. Well today we see evolution and many new ideas help explain nature, but just because science is uncovering new historical facts that may seem to contradict the Bible's or Churche's teachings, they actually don't have to. I really hope people will at least research and think about the idea before they totally rule it out.

Not all American Christians are afraid of evolution. I for one am not. When the Bible was written man was not as "evolved" intellectually as we are now. They would not have understood gases combining, evolution or anything that we now see as a basic understanding of life. God gave them what they needed to know at the time and left the rest for us to discover. I personally have found the following web site very interesting.

Compromisers distinguish between Micro and macro evolution. Micro is change within a species. Macro is between one species and another. but most offensive is the attitude of some evolution extrapolators that if change happened it must have happened on its own without divine intervention. Believers in God can believe in evolution but simply believe that God did it. Some (note I said some) of the more obnoxious Atheists insist that scientific evidence of change *proves* that there is no God. That attitude and the reaction to it causes battle lines to be drawn. It is possible for evolution, both micro and macro, to be taught without drawing conclusions about Deity but some can't resist.

Because it goes against what the bible has told us...
and the bible has told us, Adam made of DUST from the ground ; Eve was made from the RIB of Adam. how could people have evolved from a monkey if adam was never a monkey to start with... in the bible it clearly states that when God created Adam when he breathed life into MANS nose, man became a living PERSON!!! >>>Genesis 2:4-9
evolution is just the enemies way to try and drive us away or tricking us from believing our Lord God created all, he did not forget to make people, HE created us, he did not wait for us to just eventually come Lord God wanted us here then, there, and now. So he created us.
Do not fall for the enemies tricks.

there is a book that I'm about to read titled something like "Finding Darwin's God" which appears premised on attempting to reconcile evolution with creationism.
however, keep in mind that the Bible is infallible according to Christians, so when God is said to have created Adam/Eve, it is not possible for them to have evolved from monkey primates or something...
one critical distinction between humans and animals is consciousness, which is prima facie proof of the existence that God created man rather than man evolving from other species...
lastly, let me ask you this: if humans were somehow eliminated from this earth (or even more simply, if you look at an island inhabitated solely by monkeys, etc...), could these monkeys/apes/gorillas ever evolve into "human beings" insofar as consciousness/ability to learn is concerned? I say no way, not in a trillion years!

Unfortunately this subject is extremely misunderstood by christians.
Here's another question, do we "Christians" believe that all the bible is the word of God?
(2 Tim 3:16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
The truth of the matter is EVOLUTION IS A THEORY NOT FACT. It's sad that it's taught as fact and not taught as an alternative to divine design. The fact is no fossil has been found that has an ape in a transistional stage, becoming a human. Or a fish becoming a bear.
The bible says:
(Gen 1:21) And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
(Gen 1:24) And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
(Gen 1:25) And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good
These scriptures for believers, are in opposition with any THEORY that says otherwise. Above, you can cleary see all species of life will produce it's own kind and that one species WILL NOT produce another one.
*To conclude, christians don't hate evolution. We simply recognize it as false doctrine.
(Rom 1:19-23)
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their IMAGINATIONS, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
*I pray these scriptures will edify christians and persuade unbelievers concering the bible and evolution.

We have many fundamentalists of a stripe very unusual in other industrialized democracies.
Not even the Archbishop of Canterbury believes in biblical inerrancy, but Bobby Sue Fuddpecker in Boonville Nebraska does, and that means there can't be no satanic fossils nor monkey-men running around no sirree.

Since Evolution happens and humans were evolved the following scenario occurs:
1. Adam and Eve did not exist, as the origin of humans did not come from two fully formed humans to begin with.
2. Thus, there was no original sin.
3. Thus, Jesus served no purpose.
And that is why. Because evolution shows that the entire story is goofed.

Well, you don't understand how much the Christians have invested in the Bible.
In many of their minds, the Bible is INERRANT - absolutely correct or absolutely false. One mistake and they have to throw it out.
The Bible says the Earth is 6000 years old.
Evolution shows that it's several million years old at least ( geography shows its 5 billion years old).
Evolution directly challenges the authenticity of the Bible.
And some of these guys are clinging to the Bible like a drowning man clings to a rock.
