The power is an odd number, so it is definitely a negative number. Then, 2^5 is 32 (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2), so the final answer is:

    -32

    (-2) to the power of 5 = (-2) X (-2) X (-2) X (-2) X (-2)

You multiply (-2) times itself 5 times. It's NOT (-2) X 5. That's wrong and a common mistake many people make. (-2) to the power of 5 means to multiply (-2) times itself 5 times.

Since 5 is a negative number, you know that the answer with also be negative. When you multiply it all you get (-32) as your final answer.

Andrew is right, it is -32. It is not 32 because it has to be an even amount of multiplying, i.e. 2nd power, 4th power, etc., to be positive.

    -2x-2=4, 4x-2=-8, -8x-2=16, 16x-2=-32

    Check -2x-2x-2x-2x-2 on the calculator.

The people that are saying otherwise are wrong.

I looked it up on my TI-84. It is not 32, 64, or -64.

With all the people giving you answers, you're probably not going to pay attention to this BUT -- next time, post what YOU Think the answer is! Your dad is having you do this for a reason -- to prepare for the upcoming school year. You are not only cheating HIM by posting this, but cheating yourself.

you see -2 to the fifth power is the same as whats 2*2*2*2*2 since a negative times a negative is always a positive.

so in this case the answer is : 32

    hope this helps

Source(s): i got full points on my state math exam so trust me i know my stuff

    (-2)^5 = -32 (gotten from a calculator)

    or rewritten as

    -2 * -2 * -2 * -2 * -2 = -32

    You just do.

    (-2) x (-2) x (-2) x (-2) x (-2)

    :D

But don't do (-2) x 5. That's bad. Do it one at a time, first (-2) x (-2) and then keep doing that.

So the answer is -32 :)
