Alternative transprtation for visually impaired person in Hampton, VA

About a month and a half ago, I had an accident which resulted in my eyesight being severely damaged. While I am recovering, I have to rely on a very bad public transportation system. The buses are often late, and a 1/2 hour drive becomes up to 5 hours by bus. I have had to stand outside in the sun for up to an HOUR waiting for the transfer. I would like to find an alternative, but can't afford to pay big bucks for an assistant or driver...is there state-funded or low-cost alternatives that I should be aware of?

First of all I'm sorry to here about your accident. I also live in Hampton, VA, and there is not much here. Face it Hampton sucks. However, you can call HRT at 222-6100 or click on the following link and fill out the appliaction for Handi-Ride:

    http://www.hrtransit.org/services/handiride.html

HRT is located on Victoria Blvd where the old hospital use to be and they should be able to set up a schedule to pick you up at little charge.

Here we have a program called MATAplus that will pick you up and take you wherever you want to go. You just have to get a doctor/counselor/other professional to sign you up. It costs $50 for 21 rides, which I think is not that bad. It's affiliated with the major public transit system. Check your local transit's website or call your local Center for Independent Living.

Only thing is, if you're not there when they get there, they will leave you in a heartbeat. But conversely, THEY take their sweet time and will be up to a half hour late. *shrug* :) Anyway, good luck!

  • Find out if they have Paratransit Services in your area. If so, ask to see if you are qualifed to ride.
