How do I add music to my iPod?

My friend recently bequeathed to me her old iPod Nano, and she didn't have the computer charger cord for it. I bought one at Walmart and it does charge but I can't seems to put music on it. Does anyone know if maybe I have the wrong cord or if it's a problem with the iPod?

Update:

I do have iTunes and I used to have an iPod shuffle, but I didn't have any trouble with it. When i open the file menu on iTunes it doesn't give me the option to click sync iPod, so that's why it seems to me there's a problem with the iPod.
