A trip to the Philippines...

I'm planning to visit the Philippines... I know most people stay for a period of 21 days (3 weeks) but if I were to stay longer for say a total of 2 months, will I have problems going back to the US? When is it that I have to file for an extension with the US Embassy? By the way I'm a US Citizen. Thank you for your information, it is greatly appreciated.

You are not being clear about your present nationality. As such, the answer is: it depends.

If you are a U.S. Citizen, the U.S. Embassy could not care less how long you stay out of the U.S., but Philippine Immigratin authorities would and you will be limited to a 21 day stay. Presumedly, you are a former Filipino citizen, so when you arrive in Manila, ask Immigration to stamp you with a Balikbayan visa, which will allow you to stay for a up to a full year.

If you are a Philippine citizen with legal status in the U.S., then it's Philippine immigration's turn to not care how long you stay there. Conversely, U.S. Immigration (USCIS) can legally require you to a stay outside of the U.S. for no more than 6 months at a time. Be a bad girl, and they will strip your green card from you with impunity. You'll never get it back.

One of my friends stayed in the Philipines for 1 month but I don't know about 2 months. I'm sure you'll be alright just as long as you don't pass that limit. Good Luck on your trip! bring bug spray!
