Catholics, does your Apocryphal book of Tobit have a magical incantation?

Tobit 6:5-8, "If the Devil, or an evil spirit troubles anyone, they can be driven away by making a smoke of the heart, liver, and gall of a fish...and the Devil will smell it, and flee away, and never come again anymore."

Isn't that making a magical potion? Does that work against the Apocrypha being God's Word?

Short answer: Yes, the book of Tobit is not really part of the Bible Canon and does contain incantations which contradicts Deuteronomy 18:10 and Galatians 5:19 - 21 and many other scriptures in the inspired canon.

Long Answer: The apocryphal book of Tobit was probably written over two hundred years before Paul’s time. This story tells of Tobit, a pious Jew, who is blinded when the dung of a bird falls into his eyes. Later, he sends his son, Tobias, to collect a debt. On the way, at an angel’s direction, Tobias secures the heart, liver, and gall of a fish. Next he encounters a widow who, though married seven times, remains a virgin because each husband was killed by an evil spirit on the wedding night. At the angel’s prompting, Tobias marries her and drives away the demon by burning the heart and liver of the fish. With the gall of the fish, Tobias later restores his father’s sight.

Clearly, this tale is not truthful. Apart from its fanciful nature and its appeal to superstition, it contains error. For example, the account says that Tobit witnessed both the revolt of the northern tribes and the deportation of Israelites to Nineveh, events in Israel’s history that were separated by 257 years. Yet, the story says that Tobit was 112 years old at the time of his death.—Tobit 1:4, 11; 14:1, The Jerusalem Bible.

Now when the boy went down to wash his feet in the river, a large fish suddenly leaped out of the water and tried to swallow his foot. He shouted in alarm.

But the angel said to him, "Take hold of the fish and don't let it get away!" The boy seized the fish and hauled it up on the shore.

    5

1 The angel then told him: "Cut the fish open and take out its gall, heart, and liver, and keep them with you; but throw away the entrails. Its gall, heart, and liver make useful medicines."

    6

After the lad had cut the fish open, he put aside the gall, heart, and liver. Then he broiled and ate part of the fish; the rest he salted and kept for the journey.

    7

Afterward they traveled on together till they were near Media. The boy asked the angel this question: "Brother Azariah, what medicinal value is there in the fish's heart, liver, and gall?"

    8

He answered: "As regards the fish's heart and liver, if you burn them so that the smoke surrounds a man or a woman who is afflicted by a demon or evil spirit, the affliction will leave him completely, and no demons will ever return to him again.

Yes A Magical Potion is Forbidden ( However I find that a lot

of information in bible.. Seems to be forbidden

Witchcraft and Demons ( Samuel 1.28)

Saul went to witch of Endor to Raise Samuel to help him win a Battle.. ( This is strictly forbidden) and Saul was punished for it

Potions of mandrake to help with fertility etc. ( That to me is a form of magical incantation too.

I believe Definitely Apocryphal magical incantation is against God's Word. I never

heard any sermons about Tobit 5.. in our Greek Orthodox Church.. I quess this information is not ( KOSHER) and perhaps from unknown sources. ( as some materials got in or were mistranslated.)

However sorcery , incantation is definitely against God's Word.

During the Hellenists period, everyone in the region was taught Greek and it survived as a major language of the area. To say that Tobit was written by the Greeks is lacking understanding of the history of the area. Tobit was contained in the appendix of the Protestant Bible until the 19th century when it was removed.

Jesus also cast out demons and evil spirits.

I, for one, don't interpret the Bible word-for-word literally. I believe that the authors may not have fully comprehended what they were experiencing or understanding.

During this time, mental illness was considered to being possessed by demons or evil spirits. So, I take this as a "cure" for an illness - no more, no less.
