how to get a cellphone and avoid monthly bill
I already know about the pay as you go phones, but those seem to have too many hidden charges, and by the end of the month you might as well just pay a montly bill.
I dont talk a lot on the cell, maybe once or twice a day. So paying 40 a month for a contract seems ridiculous to me.
I've noticed that lots of people seem to like to buy the unlocked cellphones, why? is that somehow cheaper in the long run?
Anyone have any kind suggestions for me? I dont really want a contract.
Anyone have any suggestions?

No contract? There's the monthly Flexpay account from T-mobile. It does have a monthly cost for the plan, but you choose a rate plan, not converting a certain number of dollars to a set number of minutes. You can cancel at any time with no early termination fees, and there's no activation fee.
$39.99/mo + taxes gets you either the myfaves 300 (300 mins during the day, free nights & weekends, and 5 numbers you can call/receive calls from unlimited, any time), or 600 mins (600 mins during the day, and free nights and weekends, no myfaves).
I think there's also some plans for prepaid, something like $1/day or whatever, but I don't know how that works.
