Fading my hair color?
I dyed my hair last night and it turned out waaaay darker than I expected, literally jet black, when I was going for a rich dark brown. My hairs not very dark naturally, sort of in between a medium goldish brown. I have a picture to show you what it looks like...I don't like it one bit, and not one single compliment is going to change how I feel ha ha. I washed it this morning and I saw a bit of the color go down the drain, not a lot though. School starts in 2 weeks and I want to have dark brown hair, not black. I also don't want to redye my hair cause it's already pretty damaged, and I'm going to lay off the straightening until then. I don't want the black to fade and it to only look like a faded black...I'm freaking out here!!
How can I achieve this? Will my black fade into a dark brown? and hooowww can I get it to go lighter?
To "." ...no,
this was not my intention of the question. I'm doing it for MYSELF, I posted this question last night without a picture and I didn't get as nearly as many answers. I think it's a good visual, if you have such a problem with it, don't answer the question, smarty pants:)

You wanted a rich dark brown and that's what you got. I don't understand why you are now upset! You got what you wanted.
Of course, you don't know hair colour. Dark brown is like black coffee... that is really brown, not black. ("black" coffee means no cream; it is still brown)
Without knowing what product you used (and I'd venture to say you used hair colour, not dye), I would expect that your hair is now bleached underneath. That is, there is no natural colour in your hair. So when it fades, or you remove some of it, you are going to get some strange shades, probably a orange/gold colour. That is the base colour you have now.
What you will have to do (if you want to change it) is consult with a professional hair colourist and ask for some advice. There is your skin colour, eye colour, cost, condition of your hair, etc. to consider as well. It is possible to remove the artificial colour (not a bleach!) and then re-colour with the correct shade this time! You made the mistake of choosing the wrong shade... you really should have talked this over with a colourist first.

I did this to my hair once and hated that it turned out black, no amount of washing faded it so I resorted to a quick bleach and rinse. I just left the bleach on for a very short amount of time, really only about a minute and immediately washed it out and heavily conditioned it.This made it a medium brown...sooo much better!!!! My hair was very damaged and dry from over processing it before I put the black in so I gave it a lot of moisture treatments and eased off of any more color for a while along with a couple of good trims and it came back in strong and healthy.

Don't worry!
I did the exact same thing and mine faded into brown it didn't take too long, about a week i think! Just keep washing your hair so that some colour will come out and also spend as much time in the sun as possible as this will help to bleach it! Do NOT try and dye again as this is another one of the many mistakes that i have made and it will just make everything worse!
Good luck i'm sure it will be fine soon! :)
o yer i think it looks rly nice anyway!

If you used a permanent dye (one with Amonia and peroxide) then you probably don't want to do anything else to you hair for a while. You could redye it, but that will damage the hair. If you use a non-permanent dye that just shampooing a bunch will fade the color. It might take 20 time but shampooing will wash little color out.
I think you look great I would not change it.

Wow you have a lot of answers, I'm not sure why you're asking for more...
But I'll give you my advice, though idk if it's already been said.
If the color you dyed it was in fact a "brown" and not a black, then it won't look like faded black when it fades.
And it will fade...it just always look dark when you first dye it.
But it you want to accelerate the process in time for school, you kind of have to damage your hair a lil...
Sucks, I know. But it works.
A couple times a week use a crappy shampoo like Prell.
Or, once a week wash your hair with dish soap.
Since both aren't good for your hair, make sure you condition well afterward.
Also, straightening your hair with a flat iron will also help it fade.
Good luck, hope this helps.
Source(s): I made the mistake of dying my hair "soft black" once and I used these tips from a hairdresser and it faded to a super-dark brown...should work better for you since yours is actually supposed to be brown. - LadyJadeLv 41 decade ago
My hair's naturally dark blonde, so I dyed it black once and when it faded, it faded to a brownish color--nothing like gray or whatever. You can try washing your hair more, but it'll probably strip out the oils and hurt your hair more. If you'd rather go with a lighter color, I'd recommend Garnier Nutrisse hair dye, as it's a lot gentler on the hair, smells better, and does less damage. I had to bleach out my hair right before my wedding to get rid of red, and went over it with a G.N. color and it came out ok. Good luck!

I like the color how it is BUT if you really don't like it (which i have NO idea why you wouldn't because it totally compliments your features which is a GOOD thing) you can sit out in the sun it will fade a bit or go to your hair place and ask them if they have any tips make sure you tell them what color you want it (you could bring in a picture) and tell them you don't want to redye it too. Hope this helped!

Considering the fact that I love hair colors, it's a pretty good topic for me. I think you're really pretty. The black goes with it. Keep it black. After a while you'll begin to like it. Within time it will fade to brown. But That's four months down the road. I'm about to dye my hair hot pink.

You're gorgeous. That compliment probably wont do anything though. I would say you can buy something at Wal-Mart called something like "Color Oops" but you said you don't to damage your hair, and I'm not sure if it's healthy.
Use vinegar! It works so good. My best friend dyes her hair all the time and uses vinegar to get it out. It would probably also help to wash it more than usual with shampoo and don't use the conditioner provided by the hair dye box (if you have some) I hope this helped =]]
