laptop won't recognize my external hard drive...?

I've picked up a 7 or 8 year old laptop to use as a spare, but it won't recognize my external hard drive when I plug it in. I'm not very computer savy, but I think this it's because the usb port is 1 and not 2. I just want to get some files onto the computer, can anyone help?

7 or 8 years old? Win98 or Win ME? Neither will support a USB external drive. IF XP then do as the other post suggested and check for a bios update.

It should work no matter what USB version (it just wont be as fast). Check to see if you have any software that came with the external drive. If not, plug it in and go to My Computer. Look for your external drive there.
