  • Help with recovering data from a laptop hard drive?

My laptop won't turn on and I'm trying to recover files from the hard drive. I transferred the actual hard drive into an external hard drive case and plugged it into another computer, but when I try to access the disk I get the message: "The volume does not contain a recognized file system".

The disk itself seems to be fine (they told me it was 100% at the shop where I picked up the external case) and both computers are running Windows 7 (I also tried it on a Mac and same problem). It keeps asking me to format the disk, but I'm trying to recover data.

    Please help!

  • What's best neutral running shoe?

Hoping I could get some advice deciding on a woman's running shoe.

I had my gait analyzed on a treadmill and was told I'm about as neutral as you can get (I had previously been running in Nike Equalon's on the bad advice of a sales person which had been giving me horrible shin splints).

I run 20-40 km a week (anywhere from 5 to 15km on a given day), run almost exclusively on sidewalks and pavement, and weigh about 63kg.

I've done some research online and have come up with the Asics Nimbus, Nike Pegasus and Nike Vomero. I have preference for Nike because I use the Nike + arm band, but I do have an adapter that would allow me to attach it externally to any running shoe. I've been told New Balance makes good shoes too, but don't know too much about their models.

    Would appreciate hearing some opinions.

    Thanks.

  • question about HP tx2000 laptop?

I have an HP Pavilion tx 2000 notebook. The left shift key on this model is small and is annoying because I keep hitting the button beside it instead when I'm typing. Does anyone know if there's a way to remap the keyboard buttons? I'd like to change the key just to the right of the left shift button so that it also acts as a shift button. Thanks!

  • What's the best electronic cigarette model?

I'm trying to quit smoking and a friend suggested I try e-cigarettes (first time I heard of them). What's the best model out there? Which ones are the most popular and why? What stores carry them or do I need to order online?

    Thanks!!!

  • long-distance relationship advice?

My boyfriend of 1 1/2 years moved away 3 months ago for a job. He says he loves me and we decided to do a long distance relationship with me possibly moving there to be with him next year. In the time he's been gone, I don't feel like I get to talk to him enough and it doesn't feel like he's in my life anymore (I was ok the first month but I feel like we talk less now). He sends me an email every couple of days and we IM once a week or so, but in the time since he left, he's only sent me maybe 25 texts and has only called me 2 or 3 times. It's always me calling him. It also makes it harder because there's an 11 hour time difference between us. We have plans to see each other over Christmas and New Years, but he won't commit to flight dates, says he's 'not a planner' (I wouldn't normally plan so far in advance, but it will be high season and neither of us can afford expensive flights). We got into an argument over the phone the other day when I told him I wished he wouldn't treat making plans to see me like a chore. He said it was a chore for him and I ended up hanging up on him. I haven't talked with him or heard from him in a couple of days now. I don't feel like he's putting any effort in and am starting to think about breaking it off. Obviously you don't know all the details of our relationship, but any opinions or suggestions?

  • Is it too late to change your career at 30?

...and really, I don't mean changing 'jobs' that anyone with a highschool dipolma may be qualified for. I mean a career that will require additional years of training.

  • "socialized" health care?

I just don't get it. Why are so many middle-class Americans out there opposed to universal health care coverage? I've lived in two countries where it is free and I couldn't imagine it being any other way. I've had heart disease and cancer in my family and without it, my family would really be struggling right now. No flamers please, I just want to understand the logic.

  • blue screen of death, virus, can't detect hard drive on startup?

I've just been given someones old laptop computer. I ran a spyware program on it (an outdated version which was already installed) and it found something like 30 worms. The antivirus was out of date so I uninstalled and tried to download an up to date one from download.com but it wouldn't work (I tried two: antivir and avg). Also, I tried to download the latest versions of explorer and firefox, but nothing happened -- it wouldn't download. A few minutes later and I got the blue screen of death. Now when I try to start up the computer it says there's no hard drive (I just did a disk cleanup before all this so it was fine before). Sounds like a virus right? Anything I can do to fix? It's a fairly old laptop (a Dell), but it is running XP (home edition). One more thing: the usb port won't recognize my external hard drive (someone suggested the bios needs to be updated, but the computer crashed before I could do that). Help!

  • laptop won't recognize my external hard drive...?

I've picked up a 7 or 8 year old laptop to use as a spare, but it won't recognize my external hard drive when I plug it in. I'm not very computer savy, but I think this it's because the usb port is 1 and not 2. I just want to get some files onto the computer, can anyone help?

  • Disk cleanup in Windows XP

I can get the disk cleanup wizard to run from help and support, but the icon has totally disappeared from system tools in accessories. Anyone know how I can get it back? Also, are there any programs out there that will automatically delete and compress unused files? I have an eeepc and am constantly running out of room on the drive. Thanks...
