Help with recovering data from a laptop hard drive?

My laptop won't turn on and I'm trying to recover files from the hard drive. I transferred the actual hard drive into an external hard drive case and plugged it into another computer, but when I try to access the disk I get the message: "The volume does not contain a recognized file system".

The disk itself seems to be fine (they told me it was 100% at the shop where I picked up the external case) and both computers are running Windows 7 (I also tried it on a Mac and same problem). It keeps asking me to format the disk, but I'm trying to recover data.

Please help!

Update:

Thanks. What happened is that my Lenovo V570 just wouldn't turn on this morning. I took the laptop to TigerDirect and they removed the hard drive for me, tested it and said it was 100% fine, and installed it in an external case for me so I could access the files using the Lenovo hard drive as an external disk on another computer. I haven't formatted it (I know it will erase the data I'm trying to access), but none of the computer's I've tried will let me access the disk. I had a password on my Lenovo and that computer model has that crazy fingerprint reader...maybe this is why???

Maybe, there is something wrong with the file system. What you need is recover file system. Partition Wizard (free edition) helps recover file system of partition. I can not guarantee it must be work, but you can have a try.

File formats can come in multiple forms. NTFS and FAT32, however in your case, I'm not sure why it's not working. Was the Hard Drive working completely fine very recently? Or was there an initial problem that happened before hand and you're trying to actually recovery the data? Here's what I recommend you do if you formatted the hard drive (I hope you didn't do a full format) If you did a "quick format" then you should be able to get the data again. What I would do is safely find a way to mount it / get it connected to a computer (I'm going to mention Windows in this case) and download a program called Recuva.

It's legit software, and you can use the free version. (gets the job done) So try selecting an option where it says you scan or search 30 something passes. Maybe 35. I forgot how much. Just the highest it will allow. I don't know if they still call it that but it might even be labeled as "Gutmann - 35 passes" This is one of the best ways to try and recover deleted data.
